COUNTY SCHOOY, ROARD MET IN REGULAR SESSION Bartow, March 2.—The Board of Public Instruction met in regular session in the office of the superin tendent with all members and the superintendent present. Minutes of the previous meetings were read and approved . Petition was recelved, signed by one fourth or more of theduly quali fled electors of the Fort Meade sub. school dietrict, asking that the board call an election to determine wheth- er or not the said district shall issue bonds in the sum of $25,000 for the purpose of erecting a new school building, and making additions to the present one. Resolutions were adopted and election was ordered called for April 5, 1915, Petition was received from the patrons of the Providence school, asking that the board call an elec tion for the creation of a special tax school district. Same was grant - ed and petition ordered published in the Lakeland News. Petitionwas received from the pa. trons of the Dundee school asking that the board call an election ‘for the creation of a special tax school district, same to be known as the Dundee special tax school district. Same was granted and petition or- dered published in the Florida Chief. Communication was received from the trustees of the Auburndale school, asking that the board allow the Auburndale school to continue for three additional months in ad dition to the county term. Some of the best talent in Lakeland has been enlist . ed for this game and the battle will probably be close. The Louisville pitchers have not gotten to the point | where they can. let themselves out, | 80 that the local bdys will probably | make more basehits than their friends are ‘counting on. | At first base for the Elks team will be found Goss, the tooth doctor from Mulberry. He acquired his subtitle from 'his habit of extracting the hard ones out of the dust. Sec- ond base will be filled by King, who s heralded on the road to the secre- taryship of the A. C. L., the only ambition ke has that means more to Him than playing a good game of baseball. Shortstop Pinch, who used ‘to pitch, 1s eald to be capable of a crack game even without practice, an art required of all pinch players. In spite of his name the short. fielder isn’t the only pinch hitter the Lakeland team has. Rivers will hold down third base and the hot corner of the diamond has no terrors for him as he is a horse and mule Qealer. Haton, the car inspector, will knock down the fair balls in right field while Campbell of Mulberry will disport in left. L. W. Smith, of Haines City is the center gardener. Verigan, a star of semi professional ranks, will toe the slab on the pitch- er's mound and Manager Jimmy Holcombe, exalted ruler of the Elks, will display his authority from be. hind the mask and chest protector, where he can give orders with safety. i ‘The batting order of the Colonels Ewlll include the pick of the squad iand the first string hurlers will all zet a few innings of labor. Nome of the pitchers is yet in condition to g0 the full route of nine innings and for that reason the work will be ap- portioned between them. The lineup of the two teams follows: Colonels Platte Miller Daniels . Stansbury ... ... Derrick . . . Midkifr .. Weinberg Clemons and Crossin c. .. Perry, Northrop Ellis, Taylor, Scan- lon, Marks, Mid. dleton ...... p Osborn, who has played center for the Colonels for the past two sea. sons, may get in the game if he is well enough. He has been ill for the past day or so. | Cool breezes for a few days have Elks Campbell .. King . .Eaton | L W Smith produced a few sore arms in the | (S camp of the Louisville Colonels who | have been training here just a week | tomorrow. The first day’s effect of the reduced temperature was to en- liven the work of the club but today that inevitable stiffening process of every spring season began to crop out and its cure is work and plenty of it. H Every afternoon, however, the air has always warmed up in great shape for the antics of the players and they take full dvantge of it. Manaeer Hayden of the Colonels is a great believer in getting his men rushed through with their period of stiffness and for that reason does not spare them even at this time. This afternoon the Colonels played their first semblance of a game. It was an abbreviated affair Isting but five innings and the two teams tak - ing part were composed of the mem . bers of the Louisville squad and four or five of the Lakeland boys. as supervisor of the Rosalie school was accepted. In the matter of placing an addi. tional teacher in the Homeland school, it was agreed not to grant same as the average attendance was not sufficient to warrant same. . 'The matter of consolidating the Midland and Eden schools was de- for another bond issue, said issue not to exceed $12,000, as the as- sessed valuation of the &istrict will not at present be sufficient to war- rant an {ssue of over the above mentioned amount. ‘The county treasurer made his monthly report which was examined and approved. ferred yntil the next meeting of the board. J. G. Maxcy, F. E. Ohlincer, and J. M. Langford, trustees of the Frostproof school, anpeared before the board relative to purchasing a eite for the new Frostproof school building. Attorney Olliphant hav ing ‘given his opinifon that the board was safe in accepting the deed as submitted by T. L. Wilson, it was agreed to purchase Mr. Wilson's site for the price of $2,000. Warrant wag ordered drawn for same. The matter of pro rating the money in the Oakland district fund to the districts in which the Oak. land district children are attending school, was referred to superintend - ent to make the proper transfer. Prof. C. E. Kensinger, principal of the Winter Haven school ap peared before the board and asked that the board grant one additional teacher for the high school depart - ment of that school next year. Same was granted provided that this school meet the requirements of a senior high school and that sechool enroll not less than 60 in the high school department.
