_Ine Evening Telegram Published every afternoon from The Telegram Euilding, Lakeland, Fla. Entered in the postoffice at Lake- land, Florida, as mail matter of the second class. ———————————————————————————————————— M. F. HETHERINGTON, EDITOR ——————————————————————————————————— SUBSCRIPTION RATES One year ..$5.00 8ix months ... 2.50 Three months ...... 1.25 Delivered anywhere within the limits of the City of Lakeland for 10 cents a week. ———————————————— From the same office is issued THE LAKELAND NEWS, A weekly newspaper giving a resume of local matters, crop conditions, county affairs, etc. Sent anywhere for $1.00 per year. ———————————————————————— A KNOCK.OUT FOR THE PISTOL TOTER Speaking of the pistol-toter and his deadly, cowardly work as told in the newspapers every day, the Pen- sacola Independent suggests the fol. lowing remedy, which the Telegram long ago urged and which is as good now as when we first suggested it: “The easiest and simplest way in the world to stop murders is to teach every boy the ‘manly art of self-de- fense.’ This can be done in the pub- lic schools with practically no ex-| pense and with very little loss of time from other school duties. Let every public school set aside say thirty minutes per day, for physical culture and let trained and compe. tent instructors teach the boys how to defend themselves. This will in- still and inculcate into every boy the idea that he can protect him- self and he will not rely upon a pistol or some other deadly weapon, In other words, disputes will be set~ tled in the back yard, the best man will win and shooting and cutting will be a thing of the past.” In this connection it is worth noting that the murder average is highest in those countries and sec- tions where boxing is least practiced and lowest where it is most fre. quently employed. It is the knowl- edge of physical inadequacy that makes a man resort to a deadly weapon to punish his adversary. Remove that sense of helplessness by teaching him how to use his clenched fist on the snoot or point of his enemy’s jaw and he can work off his steam and reduce his rage without causing a funeral and go- ing through life a murderer. The Miami Herald says that the use of the submarine in war is “a cruel, sneaking, cowardly way to obtain the advantage of a foe."” War being hell and all law being silent while it is waged, that method which brinzs it sooner to an end must be recognized as the best. The allies have the submarines and the same right to use them that the Germans do, and if their devilish activity shall hasten the arrival of peace in Europe they should be re- garded as instruments of good rath- er than of evil. There is nothing fair or decent in war. The very word itself implies the absence of all fairness and decency, and the means which can bring it most speedily to a conclusion will be adopted, if possible, by any nation plunged in the inferno of relentless conflict to a finish. War means orig - inal sin in full ffower and that means the use of submarines or any other weapons of the devil that may be available. ‘The Telegram has received a val- uable batch of literature from Tal. lahassee embracing the official re- ports for 1914 of the following oLI ficers: State Comptroller Knott State Treasurer Luning, Attorney General West, State Chemist Rose, and Tax Commissioners John Neel, John 8. Edwards and R. J. Pater- gson. These gentlemen are all faith - ful and competent State officials The calendar winter Is over and the first of March dawns upon us here in South Florida with clear, blue skies and a bright, genial sun | that makes us glad we are alive and our fortunes are cast in the great southern peninsula which a genera tion hence will be a highly devel. oped land teeming with more kinds of wealth than any other part of the continent and the home of millions of prosperous Americans. Our trou- bles are but for a day and we have more to be thankful for than any other people on earth. A dispatch in today's Telegram says that it costs $6.72 a minute to talk over the nmew transcontinental telephone line just opened between New York and San Francisco. Our old friend, Andrew Carnegie, who says he wants to die poor and is troubled to find ways of spending his money fast enough to that end, could make a considerable hole in his pile by hollering hello every day for a few hours over this new long distance line.
