The_Evening. Telegram . Published every afternoon from The ‘ Building, Lakeland, ;Fla. Entered in the postoffice at Lake- land, Florida, as mail matter of the second class. M. F. HETHERINGTON, EDITOR e oo iy ti—— SUBSCRIPTION RATES One year ..... « . $5.00 Six months . 2.50 Three months ........cece0s 1.26 Delivered anywhere within the limits of the City of Lakeland for 10 cents a week. From the same office is issued THE LAKELAND NEWS, A weekly newspaper giving a resume of local matters, crop conditions, county affairs, etc. Sent anywhere for $1.00 per year. ——————————————————————— Holding up banks and getting away with both the play and the swag is becoming uncomfortably frequent these days. The $5,000 robbery at Stuart on the East Coast 1g the latest instance of the kind. It may come to pass that the only remedy will be for the cashier to drop his gun on every man entering the bank and making him submit to a search for arms before he makes his deposit or presents his check. Claude L’Engle hag dropped com= pletely out of public view in Florida, due to his retirement from journal- ism, his defeat for re election to Congress and an obstinate case or) rheumatism, which practically de. prived him of the use of his lower 1imbs. But Claude is not down and out. His eclipse is merely tempor-| ary and he is syre to come again. He 1is over at Hot Springs, Ark., taking the waters, and the Ocala Star says of him: “The numerous friends of Con- eressman L’Engle will be glad hear that he is steadily recoverln his health. He expects to be pres- ent when the legislature meets in Tallahassee and to take a citizen's share in shaping public measures.” \ The Tampa Tribune makes a pleasant and complimentary refer- ence to our county fair, now in prog- ress, and concludes with these words which indicate that the Tribune realizes the beauties of reciprocity: “Tampa ought to send large dele- gations to the Polk County Fair— not only because that county is our near neighbor and because its inter. ests are our interests, but because Lakeland has never failed in loyalty to Tampa and has always contribut- _ed of its people and their enterprise to our falrs, celebrations and carni- vals. Aside from these reasons, however, Lakeland will have much of interest to repay visitors for their time and its fair will undoubtedly disclose some new resources, beau- ties and attractions of South Flor. 1da which every devoted South Flor- idian ought to see and know."” 1t is just one good thing after an- other here in Lakeland. Commenc- ing away back in October of last year we entertained the State res union of Confederate Veterans, and since then not a month has passed without some big event of large im- portance being *“pulled off” in this convention city par excellence. And now we have a solid week to show the merits of what is probably the best county fair in the State; and did you notice the starter it got Monday in that magnificent parade? Some parade, that; perfect in all its features and" appointments, and in magnitude quite worthy of Tampa or Jacksonville. Everybody, young and old, white and colored in Lake- 1and, ought to make it a point to go out to the fair at least one time, for it is a collection of exhidits worthy of the inspection of anyvody and such a visit is sure to do you gooa, help your spirits and give a more adequate idea of the beautiful coun- ty in which you live and its wealth of resources. fThe St. Petersburg Independent makes an earnest and elaborate plea fn behalf of an embargo against the shipment of arms or ‘war munitions of any kind from this country to Eu . rope or any country engaged in war, and wants everybody In =t. Peters- burg and everywhere else to write to their congressmen to join in hav- ing the president issue such an or- der. It won't work at the present time. The motive is excellent, but with a large part of our commerce destroyed by the war we must make good in one way what we lose in an - other. That is the law of life, bru- tal and selfish though it be; always has been and probably always will be. Nor is there any reason to sup- pose that such an embargo would mitigate the evils in Europe or has— ten a decision cf the issne They will fight until one side or the other is crushed, no matter what we sa~ | or do, and they will find the wean ! ons to fight with despite any em | bargo by the government. We are! hit hard enough as it is, and we should mot put more workingmen out of work in the illusory hope that we can stay the tide of blood flow~ fng over Europe. It would be far “more logical for the president to is— “sue an order suspending ‘alf ‘wheat end meat shipments to Europe, for there ig no surer way to end a pro- tracted struggle than to cut off the Tations of the combatants. The Times Union says: “As a Democratic newspapers theTimes- Union looks forward,” etc. There now! We told you fellows all along the T.-U. was Democratic, although some of you disputed it, and mow. we have the admission direct and un- qualified right from headquarters. Pensacola is headquarters for the progressive womanhood of Florida in other than suffrage. A woman over there plead guilty to the charge of bigamy the other day. Something that probably never happened before anywhere on earth. It is bad enough to have a man roping in two or more women without the inter- vention of death or divorce, but when the women begin that game on the lords of creation, it rocks the very foundations of society.
