Harry Floyd says of Frank Mayes: “We who knew him and loved him will die now with less regret be. cause of our hope of seeing him again.” That war in Europe has come to be merely a bloody old chestnut. Considering the magnitude of the scrap and the numbers engaged, they don’t kill each other half fast enough to satisfy the public demand for slaughter; and as for results, there are none. Shoot up, gents! - o - Few people stop to think that Florida is growing faster than any State in the Union, all things con— sidered, and that from being near the bottom in population among the States as now, it will not be many yearg at the present rate of growth before she is near the top. The Palm Beach Post does not exagger - ate when it says: *If Florida maintains its present rate of growth for the next twenty years, it will have a population of 3,000,000 people, and the per capita wealth will exceed that of any Southern State. The amazing fer. tility of the soil throughout this en. tire peninsula is constantly con- founding the wisdom and experience of those who have profited there. from. Add to this its unsurpassed climate, increased ability for discov- ering its resources, with no other equal area on the American conti- nent possessing such vast advan. tages, plus a good system of tSate roads, and Florida will startle the whole world by her increased growth and development.” ————— The Fort Pierce News insists that our citrus fruits are selling by re. tail as high as ever, although the growers are receiving fom twenty cents to one dollar a box net, as against $1.25 to $5.00 last year. The News says it shows rottenness €omewhere and “the secret of it seems to be that the commission houses are banded together to give the growers the worst of it and make a big profit for themseives.” Un= doubtedly this is the general im.' pression among growers, but definite ' proof, and especially a quick rem—: edy, Is lacking. The News offers the | following suc-eestion, which looks good on the face of it: “The Florida Citrus Fruit Ex. change is helping the situation con- siderable, but it will never prove thoroughly effective until it has a cold storage warehouse in each ship. ping center and sells direct to the retailers, holding the fruit until good prices can be obtained and practically controlling the market. This is what the Exchange is build- ing to, but it must have the co.op= We should like much to share with Joe Reese his high opinion of the angelic disposition of the “sweet. tempered brother” he refers to, but *peavle close to that individual tell {us that his sweet temper is a fraud | and he is about as amiable as a win-. ter tourist who gets here jubt in time to hit a drop of twenty dezrees in the temperature. We are sorry to see that the Ocala Star betrays symptoms of getting in with the small and diminishing erowd that is nagging the adminis. rtation because of its Mexican pol- icy. President Wilson must either stick to his present attitude toward | that chaotic land or declare war— there is no middle ground. Which would the Star prefer? The Telegram hag received a copy of the address of Editor Frank Har-. xis of the Ocala Banner, delivered before the Woman’s Club of Ocala on Saturday, Feb. 6, and we have read | it with much interest from the first | line to the last. The address is en- | titled “Like Begets Like,” and it is a strong and convincing plea for universal peace throughout the world. The logic of the plea is ir. resistible and its languagze clear, simple and impressive. Such litera- | ture as this will do good wherever read and enough of it will create a public sentiment that will drive the cruel and bloody absurdity of war from the earth forever. | The Pen:acola Journal under the management of Frank Mayes was al ways a people’s paper without the cant which so often goes with pro. fessions of that kind, and it believed strongly in the policies of Woodrow Wilson and William Jennings Bryan. Now that Mr, Mayes is dead, the Journal announces that it will con - tinue to advocate those policies and | maintain constantly its attitude of | devotion to progressive Democracy. Percy Hayes will continue as man. aging editor and Dudley Barrow has been made business manager, but no one has been selected to succeed to the position of Mr. Mayes as presi- dent of the company and editor of the paper. " That fanatical simpleton who is sending the Florida papers a copy of Life containing his silly effusion on the negro and holding the South re- sponsible because God didn’t make him a white man, with all the quali ties of the superior race, is a pa. thetic kind of ass because of his sin- cerity; but not the less is he a pre. sumptuous ignoramus and an un. qualified slanderer of the people who have done more to help an inferior race than history anywhere else re- cords in racial relations. Time wag in the good old days of the simple life when every town in the country had its local humorist who told his jokes without money or price and was content with the so- cial homage he received as compen . sation for the exercise of his pecu. liar talent. But not so now. The funny man with the true vein in him has a cash market for his goods ana hoards his jokes as a miser his coin lest they get out and become stale befora he turns them into money through the press or on the plat form. It is better to be horn funny ‘!han rich these days, for the former has fun and gets money in time, whereas the merely rich man gen erally has a grouch and a bad liver as well as a suspicious outlook on life, and can't buy a sense of humor with all his millions. Little Mar. shall P. Wilder, New York’s favorite funny man, died the other day and left an estate valued at more than a quarter of a million dollars.
