The Evening Telegram: Published every afternoon from tre felegram Building, Lakeland, F.4. Entered in the postoffice at Laxe- tand, Florida, as mail matter of the second class. The above Horses and Mules will be in ty, stables Friday evening, where they can be seen and trie The agitation recently started in the Florida press for increasing the Bale of our citrus fruits is doing &ood, and from the white heat of the discussion ought to come one or, more remedies that will cure the de- l fect in part at least. We've got the Mhole vast republic east of the Mis. sississippi river as a natural and legitimate market in comparatively easy distance for the most delicious fruits in the world. The transpor . tation facilities are abundant, and if we can’t take hold of such a situ- ation and put our oranges and grapefruit in all those States among the more than sixty millions of peo- ple who can be taught to love them- and eat them regularly, it is be. cause we lack the enterprise, the ambition and the inzenuity. California under heavy disadvan . tages, both as to distance from mar- ket and the quality of the fruit, is outselling us in these States for no reason in the world except that she i8 beating us on the advertising game. The citrus crop in that State 8 handled almost exclusively by the California Citrus Exchange, and ‘you can hardly pick up a popular maga - ®ine in this country without seeing p page devoted to appealing adver. fruit market. That's the kind of stuff intelligent newspaper readers |want, for it means growth and de-. wvelopment for Florida and an agita-~ \doubtless given Senator Bryan some mental rellef, as the latter quite likely regarded the former as a for midable prospective opponent in tion of the subjects which bring|next vear's primaries. Governor Gilchrist, as is well known, does not depend upon or wait for his friends to “bring him out;” he usually brings himself out with that independence and courage for which he is known. His race for governor was an exhibition of true political courage and his adminis. tration of that office marked him as a man of genuine moral courage. l BONDS FOR SALE SNAPS for quick sale. These advertisements are written by experts; they carry se- ductive pictures of the fruit itself in dempting forms of preparation, and they are being seen and read every week in the year by millions of peo= ple, many of whom in time yield to the lure and get the orange and grapefruit habit. Nothing is p1ainer than that Flor- ida should do likewise; and it is equally plain that the péople of Florida should patronize their own goods vastly more than they do, double, even quadruple their con. sumption of fruit and thus broaden and strengthen their home market and help to increase the profits of the industry. A local correspondent of the Tel- egram, Mr. M, G. Willard, in a re= -cent communication in this paper discussed the subject intelligently, and on this point or increasing the home ccnsumption we reproduce here a part of what he said as being & plan entirely practicable and easy to put into operation right here and right now in Lakeland. Says Mr. Willard: “I believe the growers around Lakeland and throughout Polk county, with little effort, no expense and considerable present benefit to their groves and the publie health, can do much to create in the North such a widespread demand for cit- rue fruit, by first starting the appe. tite and habit here, that inside of three years the citrus fruit demand of this country would be doubled, and that the increasing demand would continue indefinitely. “How do this? Why, by the growers, little and big, selling their pomelos (grapefruit) at a fraction of a cent aplece—rather than let them rot on the ground breeding harmful insects, and polluting the eir we breathe—ito worthy and re- liable men, needing to earn more than they now can, and arrange to have them sell these “drops” from | fouse to house at one to two cents cach to the hundreds of northern= ers wintering or visiting here, and not overlooking actual residents. At such price as that they wil go, and they will start a movement for their great future benefit, sure.” The other day the editor of the St. Petersburg Independent went to a nearby grove and bought one dol. lJar's worth of grapefruit and or- 'nnges. For that price he got 46i ‘grapefruit and 78 oranges. From; the Miami Metropolis we learn 1hal’ the Pullman diners out of Miami| are charging twenty cents for half a grapefruit and the statement is made on the authority of a victim who had to pay that price. J\nt contemplate that absurdly outr: i cous difference in price and cease to | wonder at the unnatural and disas- trous conditions in (he zrlpelrult Fravtar, T a o oy Florfag v dGuced the tariff on their diners to fifteen cents for half a grapefruit, but even that pr puts the fruit ot of reach of very man le who would be glad to get at reacarable figure, travele s it a g of Telegram, Lakeland, Fla. 37111 LOST—Gold nose glasses, chain and silver button.
