Justice W. A. Hocker, for many years supreme court jus- tice, retired from the bench, and was succeeded by William H. Ellis, former attorney general. Judge Hocker declined to run for re-elec- tion last November and Mr. Ellis was clected in his stead. The court first proceeded to cast lots as they are required to do under the consti- tution to fill the office of chief jus- tice, left vacant by the expiration of the term of office of Chief Justice Thomas M. Shackleford, who, how< ever, was re-elected last November as associate justice, and will hold for six years from today. Assoclate Justice R. Fenwick Taylor, for twen. ty five years supreme court justice, and three times before, chief justice of the supreme court, was the lucky justico when the lots were cast, and was immediately sworn in as the new chief justice of the supreme court, to hold as such until Janu- ary two years hence, when hig term ‘expires.
