And when our legislature meets next ‘April it should make a liberal ap- propriation for the same purpose. S T The fame of our growing cattle in- terests in Flcrida is penetrating all over the country. The Jackson (Mich.) Patriot says: “One of the mo:t profitable stock- growing of our States is Floriga, and much attention is being paid there ‘to the development of that industry. The stockmen in South Florida have made piles of money in recent Yyears.’ T N ‘Hillsborough county voted “wet” in ‘the election there yesterday by a substantial majority of about 1,500, Wwhith was just about what we ex- pected, although we were too saga- <¢ious a prophet to go on record to itself. But the prohibitionists need Jot ‘be cast down, for :the decisive victory in the Plant City precinct which drives the saloons from that on its brave, persistent fight achieve ‘thig result. Salooms are, of crop conditions, | the ' defeat in the rest of the county. We h ¥ fiew congratulate the Plant City Courier |¢hannels for the information to FLORIDA IS HAVEN TO SEEKER OF PEACE AND HOME The observing man, who had his Entered in the postoffice at Lake-|€ar to the ground, has heard the tand, Florida, as mail matter of the rumble of an approaching storm of investments in improved and unim- proved lands in the United States, ang sees before him a new agricul_ tura] era, which will surpass any de- velopment ever enjoyed before by our country. The ultimate and after !result. of the terrible war now ex. isting abroad cannot but reflect great prosperity to America. Wi are now facing a great task. The growers and producers from the Isoi] in this country will have the |great task of feeding practically all of the now warring nations. And i before us is also the great task of 'caring for the tide of immigration bound to come to this land. When the smoke of conflict will have settled, the weary and worn out soldier has returneq to his home only to find devastation and his all wiped out of existence, again facing the task of rebuilding his home and land and sees before him, regardless {of who the victors may be, a burden of war tax for himself and his chil- dren possibly for generations turn westward toward this land where he sees peace and splendid opportunity under the most intelli- .2ent and enlightened government on earth and where await him that is entirely which every man longs for, lnde-f prendence and freedom, where he can reap the benefits of his work and his effort:. Florida with ‘its thou- ‘tands upon thousands of cheap and undeveloped acres of lands, with its ‘wonderful and varied resources, ‘with her unusual climate will prove a haven to this seeker of peace and home, and will have a great advan- tage over other State: and should get more than her share of thes.. settlers. ! But we should be prepared. We must see that they receive the prop- ,er treatment and proper instructtons along the most successful lines of "working their lands. Were it possr- ble this should be handled by the State itself, but, if not possible, ieach county in the State should or- !ganlze anq thus place themselves in Position to furnish these homeseek. ers accurate and absolute correct data with reference to their county. | Each county should have a complete ,8oil survey and should have a direc- tor of agriculture, who would be in 1 that effect in advance of the event ‘posmon to direct these people to proper handling of their lands. All (thia should be handled under what might be termeq an immigration bu- jreau, and possibly a central burean ;be established in eome suitable lo- 11 nsates for fine little city, fully compensates fo icntlon where settlers may get proper by irrevocably pledg they T think that this work should sbe handled by our own State people sseek . course, an evil anywhere, but very |2Nd not by outsiders. Each county ‘much more of an evil in a small community like Plant City than in a cosmopolitan city like Tampa. O Jacksonville has one man whose name and fame we delight to 'help in spreading. County Judge H. B. Phillips up there gave his entire December salary of $50 as a Christ- mag gift to the Children’s Home So- ciety of Florida, the noblest charity in the State, which, under the effi- cient management of Mareus C. Fagg, is providing ‘for orphan chil- dren from all parts of the State, ana has done and is now doing an amount of good work in that direc- tion practically incalculable. This society relies for its rupport upon voluntary contributions from the people of Florida, and the gift of Judge Phillips is a pointer for the Fest of us who are worrying about what to give to make others happy during the approaching holidays. y ——— A good many uninformed people associate railroad ownership in this country with the big plutocrats who count their money by tens and hun- dreds of millions, and their attitude towards the roads is generally de- termineq by their aversion for the “bloated bondholéers.” But as a matter of fact the ownersnip of our railroads is more widely distributed among people of small or moderate means than almost any other class of corporate property, and hostile legislation against the roads is hurt- ing these people in their little in_ vestments—often their only source of income—far more than it does the big rich. Here is a paragraph from a well-informed exchange worth considering: “The railroads of the United States are not owned by the Rocke- fellers, the Morgans, the Bakers, the Stillmans, the Schiffs. the Carnegies. the Goulds, the Speyers, the Vander- bilts, the Hills, the Harrimans. If this i done the State must derive great benefits and providing it s |°f JAMUATY A D19 as the greatest agricultural State in the Union. Besides the foreign immigration which we may look for, the fact that a steady slowing down of cer- tain lines of manufacter es in this country is having its effects. A tem- porary suspension of activities in stocks and bonds, a better system of rural credits and the fact stronger than ever the proof that land is the true basis of wealth, is causing thousands of peo- Ple to turn their thoughts back to agriculture lines. 1 understand other States are making great ef_ forts and are organizing along the lines that I have outlined. Especi- ally do 1 understand that the ever progressive California is doing so, and we will be sleeping on our rights unless we, too, commence to get busy. Tt ig the time now for people to show their faith in their country and State. The time to do things. We must all combine and try to be upbuilders and be prepared ifor the great final benefits to be de- riveq out of the most terrible and horrible state of affairs that the world has ever known. We need settlers and good settlers. The op- portunity is now being offered us to et them. We should be prepared.to help, for they will need help and if it is properly done all will be well paid for time and efforts given to the work.--Louis Fending in The State. ORDINANCE /NO. 181.
