He is getting the € habit of making that mistake. o Irvin Cobb, the best of American writery with first<hand knowledge of the war in Europe, achieved the triumph of a personal interview with Lord Kitchener, commander of the British army, the other day. At the conclusion of the interview, Cobb discovered that Kitchener haa pumped him dry of all he knew about the Germans in Belgium and France and had glven up very lit- tle in exchange. The only really important thing the famous general said wag to express the opinion that the war would probably last for three years. Cobb’s pen picture of the greatest of the British sol- diers is a masterpiece, and all the more effective because there is no straining for high lights and rich colors, TSR M The Cobb family of the South has always been prolific of notabilities, but Tyrug and Trvin rather put f{t over the statemen and warriors who have adorned the family tnnals in days gone, by. And great as Ty- Tus is, it now seems that Irvin, big, fat and clumsy as he is, i3 the swifter steed on. the course just now and is passing the other; in the race for world-wide publicity. He has not only achieved the unpre- cedented feat of interviewing the mighty Lord Kitchener, of the British army, but he has now cap_ ped the glory of that performance by having Kitchener deny the ac- curacy of the interview and tele- graph the denial all over the world. To our mind Trvin Cobb has reached the superlative in jour- nalism and sits 1n unchallenged supremacy on high Olympus. D About the silliest invention on this side of the water thus far in- spired by the big war is the state- ment that of 61,000 citizens of the Uhited States seeking to enlist in the Canadian contigent to fight the Germans, a majority are Southern ers, who are thus trying to repay England for her kind offices to the South during our civil war and at the same time to get even with Germany because hundreds of thousands of Germans served in the Union army during that conflict. That story is the limit of pure fancy and too stupid to stick even with the most credulous. The Southern- er who would leave his three Squares, his comfortable bed, and his peaceful land to 80 over and freeze and rot and die in the trenches of France for any such idiotic reason is the kind ?outherner we don’t grow days. of! these; —_— | The philosophy of finance is the| dryest of themes, the tariff possibly excepted, and because it is not pop- ular reading the people of thlul country do not realize what a stupendousg and beneficent revolu-l tion in our financial system was | accomplished by the late Demo-: | B oy cratic congress in the enactment of the federal reserve banking law. | We are done with panies now, so far as distrust of banks can create a panic. Thing what that means. In a speech Thursday before the New York Chamber of Commerce, ! C. S. Hamlin, Governor of the fed- eral reserve board, said: “The federal reserve system will relegate to its proper place, the } museum of antiquities, the panic generated by distrust tn our bank- ing system leading to a struggle ot self-preservation between bank and bank and individual and individual and ultimate hoarding ty the peo- | ple. Such hoarding usually follows hoarding by the banks and does not | precede it. Tf hoardinz by bants should cease, hoarding by individ- uals would never occur, and both, I believe, will be relegated to oh-' tcurity under the federal reserve ' system. . | | | 1 THE EVENING TALEGRAM, LAK ELAND GREATEST LIVE STOCK SHOW IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD PANAMA-PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL, EXPQSITION, SAN.
