Jones Exposition shows opened last night to the usual good businesg that he has enjoyed in past seasons. The shows are clean and wholesome and many new attrac- tions were in evidence. There was a total absence of games of chance which was characteristic of the oth- er showg of thig nature that have ex. hibited in Lakeland, and it reflects great credit on Mr. Jones, as he stated last night, “I strictly insist on all my attractions and concessions to be clean and moral and every at- tache to be ladies and gentlemen.” The shows will exhibit here the balance of the week and depart for Tampa Sunday. THE BVENING TALBGRAM, LAKELAND, FLA, NOV. 24, 1914. PAGRE F1IVB First Step Taken Toward Organizing A Military Company The initial step looking toward the slishment of a military com- pany in Lakeland wag taken last night when about twenty young men gathered at the City Hall and dis- cussed the matter. Much Interest in the proposition was evidenced, and LWo teams were appointed who will cndeavor to see which can secure the largest number of members. These wil] form the company at the time of formaj organlzation. es Between 60 and 100 members are aesired and all those interested *hould see Mr. Belisario or any tiember of the two teams now out after members, who will be glad to €nroll all those interested. A mili- tary company helpg a town greatly and the Telegram hopes to see such ::n organization effected at an early Gate, Several Fires Keep Department On The Move The fire department has been hav- ing its hands full, three fires since last night keeping the department on the jump. The first fire occurred last night about 9 o'clock, the alarm being sent in from Ward 2, where a house belonging to Mr. Duggan on North Virginia avenue near the Bowyer subdivision, was found in flames. This was out of the water district, and the department was forced to stand by and watch the house burn tc the ground. The family was away at the time and as the house was burning from every angle when dis- covered, none of the household ef- fects could be saved. . This morning a smoke was seen issuing from an outhouse between Kentucky and Massachusetts ave- nues near Scipper’'s stable. Some sausage was being smoked, but a by_ stander thinking it a fire, turned in the alarm. ‘The third fire occurred just a few minutes after the department had returned to the fire station, a call being sent in from the Citrus Ex- change. The drying bdin had be- come ignited and while some damage was done to the bin, the house will not be inconvenienced. The depart- ment reached the scene almost im- mediately but the blaze had been gotten hose. One of Lakeland’'s greatest assets ie itg splendid fire department and no expense should be spared in keep- ing it up to its highest standard of efficiency. Fires may not occur of- ten, but when they do a person en- tertains a feeling of safety when they know that Lakeland’s splendid fire department ig ‘“‘on the job.” REVIVAL AT THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH The revival at the First Christian church will continue all this week Services begin at 7:30 p. m. There will be some fine music and good addresses, and those who attend the exercises will be instructed and entertained. The Lakeland Elks now have a membership of nearly 200, and have sustained but one loss from death in the two years since the Lodge was organized. Further details of the program, to the rendition of which the pub- lic is cordially invited, will appear in thig paper in due tme. Bert Leigh and Hazele Burgess will be remembered as the two peo- rle who always come around each season with something new, some_ thing to make people laugh and this scason will be the biggest laughing cshow that they have appeared in yet. “Stop Thief” is the title, and as Bert Leigh says, believe me it's some entertainment. The scenic production that will be used in this show isg the same as used in its long run at the Gaiety theater, N. Y. C. Bert lLeigh and Hazele Burgess ap- peared here last season in Geo. M. Cohan’s Musical Farce, “The Little Millionaire.” Mr, Leigh played the wine agent, Miss Burgess was the maid. This season Mr. Leigh is a thief and Miss Burgess a female thief, his pal and sweetheart, but it’s only in the play. For down-right rib ttckling fun, for a swift kick at gloom, grouch and despair, see “Stop Thief' at the Auditorium tomorrow night.
