The Herald says: The Colonels are going to Lake- land. Don’t you want to go along? No, not Lakeland, Ky.; it is Lake- land, Fla., that we are gpeaking about. For the benefit of those who may not be acquainted with Lakeland, Ky., we might add that it is the site of a prominent “‘nut factory.” Thus do the Colonels come in for a lot of joshing during the coming cold spell. Col. Wathen returned from Lake- land, Fla., yesterday and announced that that city had been selected as the site for the training camp of the Louisville ball club in the spring of 1915. He also stated that he is immensely pleased with the bargain that he made and that Lakeland is a real place, a sure-enough town, where the Colonels can get plenty of fresh air, good grub, sunlight and everything that goes to put a team in fine fettle for a long grind. It is planned for the Colonels to start South alonjg about thie first week in March, and they will stick at Lakeland until March 31, when they will pull up stakes. Only one stop will be made on the homeward journey, and that will be at Atlanta, where two games will be played. The Colonels are scheduled to arrive at Louisville on April 3 and play exhibition games with major league clubs until the association season opens. 1Y No Stops to Be Made Col. Wathen and Manager Hay- dn profitted by the experience of last spring, and they are taking more pains in arranging the spring training schedule this time. The Colonels wil) go South later .«wud ‘come home later, and no time . will ihe lost with stopg between. About |that season of the year it is just as cold in Birmingham, Nashville, Chattanooga and other towns where games were played, as it is at Louls. ville, and for that reason the jump will be made directly home, with the exception of the stop at Atlanta. “Af'can be seen from a map of | Florida ‘appearing in another column 'of the sporting section, Lakeland is 'ideally situated as a training camp for the Colonels. It is on the main iline of the Atlantic Coast Line be- Itween Jacksonville and Tampa, and is a railroad terminal. There is a !branch of the A. C. L. that leaves the main line at Lakeland which goes- down to Fort Myers. About thirty trains pass through Lakeland daily, and if the Colonels haven't anything else to do they can hang around the station and be amused. Lakeland s just thirty-two miles from Tampa, and St. Petersburg is just across the bay from Tampa. The Chicago Cubs do their training: at Tampa and the Philadelphia Na- tionals will be in St. Petersburg. Connie Mack and his Athletics train at Jacksonville, so it can be seen that the Colonels will not be want- ing for games with the major leaguers during their stay in Lake-- land. Games with these teams will be played in Lakeland, and then the Colonels will visit each one of these plices for games. l Cen Get Games in going to Fort Myers last sprinsg the players and scribes, also Col. It was found out that this was true in ' every detail after the squad got to Fort Meyers and treid to book games with the big leaguers. Fort Myers is far south of Lakeland and good railroad connections are impossible south of Lakeland, hence it was rather difficult to get the clubg to end from Fort Myers. Col. Wathen 18 highly enthused over his new training camp and in talking of the town yesterday had tho following to say: “Lakeland ig a dandy little town of about 7,000 and is up-to-date in every respect. The climate i just as good as farther south in Florida and I think we will not be troubled with the chill winds off the gulf that affected the players’ muscles over in Fort Myers.. Lakeland hasl department stores that speak well of a city of its gize. It has paved streets, city-owned electric and wa- ter plants. The streets are paved and beautiful residences line the “Wedding S0P PE R PR RGO GRRPRE PRSP PP PSP N streetg in every direction. _ “There are a number of lakes around Lakeland, hence the name, and 1 feel sure that the boys will enjoy plenty of good fishing. This town ig also in the strawberry belt, and T have been told that the straw- berry season starts there about the time that we will land there. Threre are splendid hotel accommodations there and plenty of good grub that the players will like. The ball park where the Colonels will train is about seven blocks from the center of the city. The park is fenced in and has a grandstand that will seat about 1,000 fans. It is a splendid town for a training camp, and 1 ! feel sure that the players will enjoy their stay there.” Lakeland is not as far from Louis. ville as Fort Myers is, and for that reason the journey south will not be as tiresome as that of last season. The Colonels will leave here in the morning about 8 o'clock and will arrive in Lakeland the next after- noon about 2 o'clock.
