PRENDERGAST. : z.'k.fi'fi.fi.#.fi.fi.fi.fi.fi.fl.fl. “How are you and that nice young man in your office getting along those days?” asked Polly as she and Flossie rode home together on the street car. “We are beginning to sit up and take notice, or he is, at least,” replied Flossie, patting the kiss-me-quick curl just forward of a small and per- fectly pink ear. “Just the same, i though, I am going to cut out the en-' dearing names.” | “You have never gone and called him endearing names!” i “That is just what I did do.” - “Oh, Flossie! That is such & mll-' take. You must never try to make | an impression on & man by calling bim endearing names.” “I know that is true as & mcnll thing, but this case was different. You see, there was a lull in the work [ at our office, and we girls gathered | about the drattsman’s board, and we yrere gossiping there. Finally I crossed ‘my arms on the board and put my head upon them and closed my eyes—". “Headache?” “Never had a headache in my life. Just a knowledge that I look rather fetching with my long lashes brushing my cheek, and my lips just slightly parted.” “And you certainly have got pretty . elbows.” “I thought of that also. While Isat there with my eyes closed Lulu left her place next to me to do some little bit of work she had overlooked and Mr. Gillis sat down in her chair. He had a letter in his hand and he reached over and gently tickled the back of my neck with it, and I said: ‘Please don't do that, dear,’ and there was a world of sugary and tender pleading in my tone.” “Horrors!” “Certainly! The other girls just screamed! Mr. Gillls looked embar- rassed and pleased, and he blushed to the roots of his hair. Of course I & a [] ° 4 3 [ 4 [l -4 “l Was Dreadfully Angry.” was covered with confusion, and a blushed and looked half angry—you want to try that before your mirror some time; it is ever so effective.” “But what happened then?” “Why, Lulu returned and the whole story had to be told to her, and she | nearly had a fit, of course. I pout- ed and then joined in the laugh. Lulu sat down and Mr. Gillis remained | there, and the girls, except Lulu, went back to their typewriting, and I crossed my arms and again rested my head | upon them and closed my eyes. Then Lulu patted my shoulder and said: ‘Never mind, Flossie. You may call | me “dear” any time you feel like it.’ | Without my knowing it, she got up | and left the table just then and went ! into the adjoining office. I said: ‘I never would call anyone “dear” but; you.' " | “And no one was beside you but Mr. ' Gillis!"” “Only Mr. Gillis.” ’ “Worse and worse! What did he say?” | “He said: ‘I am glad, for I should i not want you to call any one else such names.’ f “Of course my eyes snapped open then, and I was dreadfully angry! 1 said: ‘I did not mean to call you that!’ He said: ‘It would be easy for me to like it if you did.” “Gracious! What a comedy of er- rors! What did you do?” H “Went back to my typewriter and . hammered the keys furiously and ' blushed all the afternoon. Later in the day he came like a great, scared schoolboy and asked me if he might call Sunday evening. He saild he would like to meet papa and mamma.” “Did you tell him he might?” ! “Indeed I did. I told him they would be glad to meet him.” “Ah, indeed!” “What do you mean by that?” “I was just wondering whether didn’t know it both times when Lulu | left you there with your eyes shut.” “Why, you dreadful girl!"—Cki : Daily News. - | 1 \ i you Hopper Recognized. | “Even animals show their feeling,” | remarked De Wolt Hopper, the come- | dian, to a friend the other day. “Only ! yesterday an animal showed me mt-l itude. Readers who are puzzling their brains to think of little novelties to make for bazaars will be interested in | S the sketch we give of a neat little pincushion -and trinket tray that is easy to make and that would be sure to sell well. For constructing it two small card- board boxes must be procured. The lids may be dispensed with as they will not be required, and the boxes placed side by side and securely fastened together. A simple way of doing this 1s to run paper fasteners through the sides that touch each other, and this is shown accomplished | In the smaller sketch at the top on the left of the illustration. The handle can next be fastened in its place, and it s made of two strands of wire with narrow ribbon twisted round and round it. The exterior of both boxes and the interior of the left- hand box, are loosely covered with soft silk, gathered into a tiny frill at the upper edges and again at the base. The division for the pincushion is filled with cotton wool and covered in &t the top with velvet, and to com- Plete this little article it is ornament- ed with three smart little ribbon bows, one tled on in the center of the handl and the other two on either side.
