THE «vXNING TELEGRAM LAK-EL'-L\'D, FLA., OCT. 13, 1914. 'iGreat Ball Game On Local Grounds Thursday Afteriiocn| The world’s series will take a back seat and be forgotten on Thursday afternoon, for, on that date, Oct. 15, IA. D. 1914, the Elks team and the Lakeland Reds will play ball on the local grounds. There has been some specuation as to who the Lakeland Reds are, and after a confidential tete-a-tete with the Honorable Jimmy Holcomb, the handsome manager of the Elks’ team, we are informed that they are no other than the original Lake!and players. The Elks team declare that such stars as Billy Garletts, Ginter, Sawyer, Watson, Smith, Spivey and the other celebrities who compose the Lakelana Reds have no terrors for them for they are going into the game to win. There wil! ‘be a big crowd on hand to see if these gentlemen are rea! truthful citizens and also to enjoy a gond game, probably the last until next year. The game wlll be called at 2-45 sharp, and the admigsion will be 25¢, the gate receipts to go to the Elks’ charity fund. Woodmen to Have Unveiling On Sunday Afternoon The Woodmen of the World will unveil a monument Sunday after- noon to the memory of Mr. John Aylor at the Lakeland cemctery, the exercises to take place at 3 o'clock. ! There will be music by the band, an address by State Manager Dame, and ' other interesting features, which 'the public is most cordially invited to attend. "“Next March the State convention ‘of the W. O. W. will convene in sLakeland at which time about 80v delegates will be in attendance. This order is one of the strongest from a financial standpoint, in Flor- ida, having nearly one million do:- lars invested in Florida securities, $50,000 of which is in Lakeland school bonds. On Wednesday night the party camped on the Roberts’ lawn in the midst of one of the finest citrus fruit groves in Florida. Went fish- ing by moonlight and again in the early morning Thursday and caught enough fish for breakfast, which the amateur chef, Robison, broiled and fried brown. A run was them made into Bee Island, where the party was feasted on as fine Florida Fav- orite water melon as ever smiled on a vine. Then on to Avon Park and back to South Frostproof, and west rinto the Langford settlement, on the !west side of Clinch lake, and north to North Side across the canal, east lto North Frostproof, and across i Blue Jordan into Kissimmee Island, and to camps at the Davis sheep pens. Here another jolly good night of cooking and feasting, and glad dreams. At 5 a. m. on Friday the party was up and breakfasted, then off to Kissimmee lake and up its shore across one of the most magnificent and valuable prairies n America through the pastures of the Light- seys, Lewises, Stokes and Zepperers. ) Here the splendid herds of Grades and Shorthorns and Polled Angus cattle were seen in thousands--sleek and fat with never any feed but the native g rasses, would gladden the hearts of the biggest and best cattlemen in America, and our par- ty as a unit declared ‘“No danger of a famine in Florida. By noon we had crossed the canal ' sides of that road for the entire dis- tance and we know how to get 'em, and when it get right down to jokes and songs and scenery and good cooking and bon-cameraderie, we'll keep you laughing and glad to be along and alive. But do you know there was one exclamation by that quartet when we got into Minor Stephens lane, and Lake Hollingsworth Love in sight? Fellows, this is the best yet. There are a mighty fine lot of young women in this town. The one tha. a wise woman in her generation. But there are other young women in this community that are leaving undone one of the things they ought and would do if they were posted, and that is get a rope quick on to Charles Robison and Max Sumner, for these two boys are chefs right and they can wrestle with pots and dishes. We burned 21 gallons of gasollne, we ran 349 miles, we crossed sand hills, sloughs and creeks, we never got stuck; we had never a hlow out or other machine trouble. Fred O'Doniel is a chauffeur at hoth ends, and in tne middle, He can keep speed up to 20 miles an hour, he is as good judge of women ag are the others of the party, and one of em is a past master and ere many moons we are going to take our good ‘wives and our sweethearts for an entire week of this identical trip. 'And do you do likewise, for the deer, wild turkeys, quail, squirrels and wmipe will all be ripe on Nov. 20 ‘and we got ’em located. In all of our three days’ run and two nights in camp there was never an obscene story or whisper of scandal, and God was glad and good to us. Brlporeg B PR PGSRBS oehd DRr. SAMUEL F.
