These same Ing houses that buy beef on the hoof sell it people in Florida, ang get to add freight two times, cost of buying ang selling and manufac- turinz, and some profit. The rail- road has no reason to complain; it gets freight twice where not tc have any at all. The Urgent Need The above goes to show that South Florida is in need of a meat pavk-l ing house. Some day when the peo- ple of Florida need to economize (if inot before) such a thing as a pack-! +ing house will pe built overnight. Necessity always was the mother of invention and doubtless ever will be, so0; as I said, some day South Florida is going tc have a meat , packing house—there are ways about it. Location Now that we realize that it is go- ing to come, it may be in order to discuss the location of it, and we can agree on ome thing more, and that is, the community that wants its this Louis pack- the [Floriga back to the do not for- no two Protest Against . Local Team Goes = +KXNING TELEGRAM LAK v To a Committee A meeting of the Florida State League was to have been held yes- terday at the Board of Trade rooms in the city to consider the matter of the protest filed by Manager Leon of the Tampa team against Lakeland team for playing men eligible to play in the games of 23d and 24th at Lakeland. these games were played under pro- test, Mr. Leon notifying the um- pire btefore the game that he wou.a make formal protest against the under the league rule that a man | must have been signed up with al team seven days before being eliglf ble to take part in a game. On coming to the city later ne dent of the league, setting forth that at least four of the Lakeland players who took part in the games mentioned are playing under other names than their own. 1Ia other words, men have been brought in and played under the names of men who were signed up at the be- ginning of the season. This, of course, was not fair if done and Manager Leon claims to bhe well able to prove that such was the case, “We would not have objected to | their playing Ty Cobb if they could ernment of the State of \iss Hattie Timberlake of Kaho- It most and wants it in earnest is !get him to come,” said Lcon. “But |legislative, Executive and Judicial. ka, Ark., arrived in the city this 2oing to get it. If Lakeland knows what is good | after it, too. 3uch a plant is, with- out question, a good thing for the whole of South Florida; but what ‘is good for the rest of the State is worth the interest of Lakeland. i Lakeland is only a part, though an , important part, of Florida, and win il‘rosper according to the rest. Lake- |1and has the facilities for such an enterprise. The fact that Lakeland is the recognized railroad center of South Florida should be an argu- { ment strong enough to tie the prop- osition down here until her citizens see this opportunity and make ‘“The Lakeland Meat Packing House” a reality. What Are We Going to Do About It? | The worst obstacle in the way will be indifference, or lack of ac- tivity on the part of those who ought to be pushing the preposition, The cry of freezing out by the meat trust will have to be met, and the danger coming from it in reality will have to be considered; put if the majority of meat producers and meat consumers get together in co- operation, I think the packing trust 'will let us alone, or will be satis- fied with annoying us a little once in a while. When the producer gets a living price for his product, and the consumer is enabled to escape the higher cost of living, the coun-,, try will prosper and build up on a 'sound and lasting foundation. Help the farmers to a stable market, and we will soon have more farmers who will deliver the goods. Lakeland has a mission to per- ‘form in the new era of South Flor- ‘ida’s meat production, for which an up-to-date packing plant is the ground work. If Lakeland wants ‘this plant she gets it. J. Trimble, of Lakeland, Worthington, of Tampa, were the only members of the league who showed up and no formal meeting was held. The president, under the authority vested in him, referred the protest to a committee consist- ing of Messrs. Perry G. Wall, of Tampa, A. H. Reagin, of Fort Meade, and G. A. Bailey, of St. Petersburg. They will be called together later and the matter laid before them in formal fashion. There are two postponed games to be decided, one between Tampa and Lakeland, and one between St. Pe-| tersburg and Tampa. Presldcntl Worthington announced that the Lakeland game would be played as a doubleheader in this city Tuesday | afternoon, when Lakeland is due to play a scheduled game. The first game game will be called at 2 o'clock and the two will be playodl for the one price, the usual figures prevailing.—Tampa Times.
