The great white plague—tu- berculosis—is more to be feared than the Black Plague, the name given in history to bubon- “pulmonary con- sumption” is always with us. Its approach and development are slower and, if possible, more insidious and stealthy, while bu- bonic plague may be guarded against by well understood methods. Tuberculosis—and here meant the disease as it affects the lungs— frequently —gets a firm hold upon its victim before its presence is even suspected. Its greatest foe is fresh, clean air, an unlimited supply of it. It is more efficient than medi- cines, for no drugs can stop tu- berculosis. i The disease is not communi- cable in open air, and this fact is recognized in the modern treat- ment. Vast sums are spent ev- ery year in the erection and maintenance of hospitals. Pennsylvania spends annually a ic plague, for is million dollars for this purpose, splendid buildings ex- to provide equipped and managed by r in enabled to advise and irect and teach. (ll‘f;ltc plan is practical because it is within the reach of all, be- cause it segregates the individu- al patient from other patients, and hecause it keeps him under the influence of accustomed sur- roundings and friends, whereas the removal from such environ- ments necessarily must have an influence more or less mentally depressing. And thus it has many advantages even over the ceneral open-air sanatorium, where are gathered many other victims of the dread disease, whose conversations are usually a continuous comparisons of symtoms and discussion of the depressing conditions that have gathered them in one place jor one purpose—to fight off tdeath as long as may be possible. MUSIC CLUB MEETING The first regular meeting of the Friday Musicale for the season of 1914-1915, will be held Friday, Sept. 27, at 3 p. m., at Mrs. Fletcher's Studio. All members reading this notice, please notify other members. By order of the president. LUCIE F. B. EATON, Secretary. No. 66 of the conduct its Alamanda Grove Woodmen Circle will perts; but these great sanatoria !\, .iling exercises in Lakeland cem- become in fact, little more than'(nr) on Sundey afternoen at 3 hotels for the boarding houses for the poorer classes. Massachusetts, the classes. Massachusetttes, the first of the states to build such institutions by legislative, appro- priations, is abandoning the plan and others will surely follow the policy, because it does not recog- nize the full value of an unre- stricted circulation of fresh air, such as is impossible within walls and roofs of brick and stone and tile, no matter how thoroughly ventilated. The open-air - sanatorium, which affords protection only from the sun and rain and storm, which welcomes every breeze that blows, which brings in un- adulterated the sweet odors of is the that the nearest ideal condition science has recognized for treatment of the disease. The enclosed sanatorium plan is almost prohibitive by state ap- of its In Florida it is entirely impossible, as well as inefficient, both sexes and both for in separate Even the open-air idea is objectionable, only less degree, for the same reason. The plan favored by Florida’s Board of Health is based large- sanatorium ly on the education of the people to the facts about the discase, its seriousness, its way of spreading and the responsibility of the in- dividual. For the treatment of tuberculosis is not a matter for the physician alone; it is large- ly a sociological problem, for whose solution popular senti- ment and public opinion must contribute their full co-opera- tion. The Board urges the open-air treatment, because it is avail- able to all and its cost is within the reach of the poorest. The patient should be separated in Lis sleeping and living from the rest of the family. A canvas tent, properly floored and fur- nished and placed in the yard surrounding the home, is almost ideal for the purpose. Nourish- ing food prepared in the family kitchen is available; the compan- ionship of the family is possible and home interests and doings afford the all important mental - loccupation and diversion. The further development of the idea includes also the exten- sion of the district nursing sup- ervision, by which the entire state is divided into sections, each under the direct care of a competent nurse, who has an ac- quaintance with every tubercu- lar patient and who by frequent MW?‘MW W.
