BE IT ORD COMMIS! LAKELAN That section flve of ordinance No. 162 of the City of Lakeland be amended to read as follows : 1. Material to Be Used—The material to be used in the work shall consist of Portland cement, sand and broken stone, each of which shall be the best of its kind obtainable in South Florida. 2. Portland Cement—The Portland cement used in this work shall be kept dry until it is used on the work. It shall pass the stand- ard tests of the American Association for testing materials and the contractor shall sub- mit a report from a competent chemist to the effect that this cement has passed such tests. The tests shall not be furnished by the man- ufacturer or seller of the cement, but by an entlrely independent chemist or a commer- cial testing laboratory. No lumpy or caked cement shall be used on the work. AINED BY THE BOARD OF CITY A 5 OF THE CITY OF 3. Sand—The sand shall be clean and coarse. A sand equal in quality to Lake Weir sand will fill the specification. No fine 9 sand or any sand containing more than 2 per cent of silt shall be used. 4. Broken Stone—The broken stone shall he in pieces of not greater than one and one- half inches in diameter and not less than one-fourth inch in diameter. It shall be clean and there shall be no sand or other fine material mixed with it. The broken stone shall be hard and sound. A good quality of flint rock or chert will fulfill the specifi- cations. No soft limestone or other soft rock and no broken brick shall be used. 5. Mixing—The following shall be the method of hand-mixing, and the results at least equal to those obtained in this way shall be obtained by machine mixing; the sand and cement shall be mixed dry until the mix- ture is of an even color and there are no streaks. A sufficient quantity of water shall then be added and mixed with the mixture of sand and cement and the consistancy of the mortar shall be such that it flattens out when heaped up in a pile. With two parts of sand and one of cement, thls mortar should consti- tute the top of the coat for finishing side- walk. For a lower course there should be added to the above described mortar, parts of broken stone which shall be thor- oughly mixed with the mortar by turning the that all the pieces of rock shall be completely coated with mixture over or otherwise, so mortar, 6. Trees—Where there are roots of trees, these shall be removed to a depth of six inch- es below the subgrading. A space of twelve Inches in width shall be left around the trunks of all trees, in which no cement shall be placed. This space shall be brought up to the level of the walk with properly tamped earth, 10. Joints—An open joint extending clear through the concrete shall be made at least every elght feet. This joint shall not be more than one-fourth inch in width at con- struction, not less than one-eighth inch. A joint at least one-fourth inch in width and not more than three-eighths of an inch in width shall be left at all curbs or where the slab is built on top of a wall. 11. Application of Top Course and Plac- ing Concrete—The top course should be put in place on the lower course as soon a5 practical, so that the lower course shall not take its initiai set before the top course comes in contact thereon. The lower course shall be thoroughly tamped as it is placed. No con- crete shall be placed after it has begun to take its initial set. Section II. Ordinances in confiict with the foregoing, heretofore placed, are hereby re pealed in so far as they conflict [ hereby certify that the foregoing ordi- nance was duly passed at a regular meet- ing of the board of commissioners of the city of Lakeland upon the tenth day of August, A.
