Well, you were not one of the great throng that filled Bartow’s streets Saturday and had the unalloyed pleasure of seeing a big downpour of wetness strike in on their exteriors and soon find itself tangled up in their more or less intimate linen, said linen soon resembling a weeping willow or most anything else that is equally drooping. Bartow was prepared to give the crowds the time of their lives, and the automobile parade in the morn- ing was said to have been a great stunt. The Lakeland Elks went over and were ‘“‘around there” from all reports, being royally entertained by the Bartow members of the Lake- land Lodge. At noon barbecued meats, pickles and bread were served, and it was while sampling the aforesaid that the heaveng opened, and great was the fall. The crowds rushed for the grand stand and those who saw it was useless to rush—well, we draw a friendly curtain on both their looks and their feelings. After the rain storm, two games of ball were played, Bartow beating Nichols 6 to 2 and Tiger Bay defeating Brew- ster 4 to 0. When it rains it pours, and not only did it rain water but trouble of another kind—the regular train due here at 8:30 p. m. was delayed by a wreck and two special trains from here had to go down to get the crowds—the first being the special that went down in the morning and the second being a train of baggage coaches, all that were obtainable, in which the tired crowds assembled and were brought back to Lakeland and other points north, the last train jcetting in about 11 o'clock Satur- day night. The airship, which many people went down to see, started on its up- ward flight in the morning but ran into a wire fence which stopped its operations until later in the after- noon when once more a flight was at- tempted and when about twenty feet in the air the machine caught in the top of a clump of trees and was torn to pieces. The Bartow pesple spared no ef- forts to make the immense crowd, estimated to have numbered about 15,000, have a good time, and they were in no way responsible for the conditions which tended to mar the pleasure of the day, and everyone went away feeling that the day had been a great occasion and one that will not soon be forgotten. The readers of the Telegram have so much faith in the truthfulness and reliability of this high-class journal that when they meet an April Fool joke in the middle of its columns on the Fourth of July they fall for it immediately, as evidenced the fact that scores of people 0'Steen and Jack Chunn to get information as to what moment they expected to ascend into the air in the aeroplane at Bartow on the Fourth, and were quite sur- prised to learn that popular voung gentlemen nothing about their contemplated ascendency to the realms above. We believe that Bartow owes us a card of thanks for that little item, as we understand nearly every one of the 15,000 peo- ple that went to the celebration has these knew heard the county’s two best lookers | to be passengerg, and was their disappointment— even the airship refused to go up without them, and all “the saddest words of tongue or pen it might have been.” were going great agreed that 0 ' ' ' ' . LAKELAND—NATEST, CLEANEST AND MOST ATTRACTIVE Of the recent meeting of the South Florida Press Association held here. |° the Zephyrhills Colonist says: A large number of editors south from Ocala and Sanford, met in Lakeland last Friday for the purpose of organizing a South Florida Press Association, which was enthusias- tically accomplished, and the new babe was born, with bright prospects for the future good of south Florida pencil pushers. Mr. Humphries of Bradentown was elected president and Mr. HeHtherington of the Lake- land Telegram, secretary. After an enthusiastic creation of the creature, and all matters of usefulness proper- ly tagged, it was decided to hold the next meeting at Arcadia the second Friday in July. At that time structure will be completed that will be a joy forever. The newspaper men were strictly the guests of Mr. and Mrs, Hetherington, the enter- prising proprietors of Lakeland's de- seminators of news, the two papers, and, how royally genuine hospi- tality was distributed. A punch bowl of large dimensiong was placed on a table in the assembly room on the third floor of the handsome ‘‘Tele- gram” building, and it was filled with a most delicious nectar, and cracked ice. Sliced banana and lem- on floated on its cool and inviting jsurface and the tropical atmosphere was made comfortable by even a look. At the close of the meeting, the Board of Trade had automobiles on hand and tok the entire assembly a trip around the city. It is our de- cision that Lakeland is the neatest, cleanest, most' inviting little city that we ever visited north or south, oh, Auxiliary Met The Auxiliary of the First Presby- terian church met June 28 at the church with a good attendance.
