The least impressive army I have seen anywhere, writes Fritz Arno von de Ellen in Harper's Weekly, is that supporting the federal government. Officers with slight knowledge of even the most elementary tactics are placed in command of green men who scarce- ly know how to handle the modern ; ‘ equipped to do a equipment with which they are sup- ) plied. I had an opportunity to study \ Huerta's forces at their best, for the ! pick of the troops In Mexico City was drilled before the motion-picture camera, the idea being to impress the outside world with the power behind the federal cause. But it takes more than uniforms and guns to make a modern army. It Is second nature for the trained soldier to obey; but the Mexican is without that second na- ture. He generally obeys because he is afraid that he will be stood up against a wall and shot. An order to transport troops brings confusion, ow- ing to a woeful lack of system, and a Mexican company in camp would be an astounding spectacle to a foreign officer. . Insect Beauty Patch. In spite of the long run which beauty patch styles in veils have had they continue to be widely featured and to sell with considerable free- dom. There is an effective beauty patch design in the new circular veil in the form of a handrun floral design, large enough to cover almost one en- tire cheek. All sorts of insect beauty spots con- tinue prominent. Among the newest of these in a black bug on a flesh-col- ored hair-line. The body of the bug {8 heavily embroidered on the mesh of the veil, but the wings are em- broidered on a separate piece of net 80 as to hang loose from the veil. The New Plald Bags. The new plaid bags are quite differ- ent from the brilllant ones of the early spring. They are made of gray or tan twilled silk for the upper part, and with stripes in dull, soft colors for the lower part, and they are ended with a long tassel in the color of the top of the bag. $5 R s ey THE EVENING TELEGRAM LAKELAND, FLA, JUNE 24, 1914, Mrs. Dimock, who heads the George Washington Memorial association, which is to erect a great convention hall in Washington as a memorial to the first president, is prominent in society and is a sister of the late Wil- Ham C.
