Jones of Alabama. During his long career from gallang in Lee's army to the federal bench he illustrated all the virtues of the sturdy stock he came from and was every inch a man. Ile made many enemies, as do all men who have the courage of their convictions, and they hateq him long and hard. Good proof that he was a real man. o The Miami Herald reads a de- served lecture to those editors with a mistaken sense of humor and the fitness of things otherwise, who are always posing as the victims of pov- erty and who ““lay it"” to their trade. Al] the fun has long been squeezed out of that quasi-mendicant attitude and to be ‘“‘broke” is just ag discred- itable to the newspaper man as any other member of society and makes thim just as unwelcome as a guest. The world has a poor opinion of ‘“‘busted”’ editors anq wants to know why they don’t’ quit their trade if they can’t make a living at it. ——0 boy soldier Some of the candidates for State and federal office in Florida are al- ready publishing their literature in extenso in the papers over their sig- natures as required by law, but gome of them are not complying with another clause of the law which re- quires that such appeals for votes shall be marked ‘“paid advertise- ment."” Failure to affix the signature and the paid advertisement mark carries a mighty stiff penalty, towit, a fine not exceeding $1,000 or by im- prisonment not exceeding ong year or by both. And if the appeal is in the form of circulars the name of the printer or publisher must also be attached. RSy R John Stockton's celebrated hoodoo in Florida politics is again on the job ang likely to stay there un- til the last vote is cast in the June primary. Mr. Stockton’s refusal to meet Senator Fletcher on the stump is arousing unfavorable comment all over the State and his most devoted organs can find no excuse for him that sounds well. The Miami Her- aldg in discussing the matter, has this to say: “The declination of Mr. Stockton was to have been expected. He is in no sense Mr. Fletcher's equal ag a speaker or as a statesman, and he would be at an extreme disadvantage in attempting to meet such a man as the senator in debate on the question he has ratsed. He and his managerg recognize his limitations as a speaker and very wisely refrain from meeting the senator before the people. But if Mr. Stockton is nor strong enough the charges he has so hastily made, he ought, in good conscience, to refrain from making them on the stump or in his literature. If he is not strong enough to cope with one senator, what would be his record in the United States Scnate where, if by some error he were elected, he would be obliged to meet and oppose other brainy men of that great body?” to make good honor-!ing” our marines from the housetops | and he'! ing up a fine, progressive, prosper-’ | - o War is no Alphonse and Gaston affair anq those people and papors denouncing the Mexicang for “snip- ized mur- ht to kill your ambushing or der, ang you've a rig ipin adversary by in pretty ne other way jong as he is trying to kill you.
