And Triec will now proceed to do some tall trumpeting and feel that he has not exhorted in vain nor expostulat- ed without reward. SN PSR By a large mgjority the people of St. Johns county have voted to is- sue bonds to the extent of $554,000 to build sixty-four miles of brick roads in that county. This will give St. Johns more miles of brick road than any other county in the State, county a decisive ELAND, FLA., APRIL 771914, e MADAME MOUNTFORD AT M. E. CHURCH SUNDAY NIGHT Mr. (. Rucker Adams plans to have Madame Mountford deliver her lecture, **The Ministry of Methodist church This is a dra- famous Christ,” at the next Sunday night. of Christ, and is peculiarly appro- priate to Palm Sunday. A silver offering will be taken for the benefit of Madame Mountford, who has been ill for some time and able to fill only a few special en- gagements, instead of doing the full (Chautauqua work, for which she is always in great demand. Madame Mountford’s lectures are immensely entertaining as well as instructive, but it is a stiff price to pay for com- paratively small mileage. There ought to be some way to get good county roads for less money. The sand and oil road, not nearly costly, should be given a good try- out by some progressive county. s e Champ Clark is the most impres- sive and portentous thunderer in this country when his oratorical geyser i8 in good working order, and he was never more impressive and Jbortentous than in his really great speech in the House against the re- peal of the tolls exemption law; but it was altogether waste work save as a contribution to high class Amer ican oratory of the perfervid type. There being no constitutional limit to the gab of the great American senator, the Senate will talk itself to exhaustion on the bill and then pass it. Likewise Woodrow will again have his way, as has become his habit since away back yonder. PR, R Yesterday was the anniversary of the birthday of Thomas Jefferson, the father of the Democratic party, who was born 171 years ago at Shadwell, Virginia. If Mr. Jefferson were alive today he would be em- titled to hold a mighty fine opinion of the party he sired and inspired so thoroughly with his principles that all the hard knocks of a century have simply improved its health, strength and digestion, confirmed ity purpose to live forever and put it in full possession of the United States government. That bantling of years was rome kid, Mr. Jeffer- son, and we are proud to claim kin with it and vote for it every chance we get. PRSEEERE § Hoary with the weight of cen- turies, good old St. Augustine is held in almost reverent regard by all true much sympathy for her throughout the State because of the fire which devastated her yesterday morning before daylight and destroyed prop- erty approximately a million dollars in value, including five hotels and the county courthouse. But it was great good fortune that not one life was lost where there were so many narrow escapes, and as big modern fires always result in bet- ter built cities quickly rising from the ashes, St. Augustine will be im- proved in the end because of her disaster. . RIS - A local mmgistrate down in St. Petersburg fined a man $10 and costg for assault with intent to mur- der another man by shooting him through the jaw, and the St. Peters- burg Independent is righteously in- dignant at such a travesty on jus- tice. Ts assault to murder calls for a ten dollar fine in this St. Peters burg court, murder itself would probably be punished by the cruel and inhuman penalty of $25 and costs, or maybe thirty days board at the expense of the county. WP —— When we see almost daily in the papers of prisoners escaping from jails by the simple process of sawing the bars with files which they apparently have no trouble in getting it occurs to us that a more appropriate way to spell the name of the unsophisticated gentleman who is supposed to be responsible for the safekeeping of the prisoners would be “jay-ler,” with the accent on the first syllable. and those who go to hear her will enjoy a rare intellectual treat. so | WORDS OF WISDOM FOR TELEGRAM READERS Atlanta spirit built Atlanta.
