Mayor O. M. Eaton and wife, ('ol. John S. Edwards and wife and Mrs. A. J. Holworthy motored over to Bartow this morning and spent a few hours, making the trip in Mr. Eaton’s car. Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Holmes, of Galesburg, Ill., are 1n the city, hav- ing spent the winter in other parts of Florida, and ‘desiring to see the State’s best town before returning to their home. They are being shown around by their friend, Mv. 0. C. Lanphear, N 1 Rev. and Mrs. J. Edgar Wilson are now occupying the Riggins' house on Tennessee avenue, recently vacated by the family of Mr. T. L. Walker, who have removed to Tam- pa. Rev. Wilson is editor of the Methodist State paper, the Florida | Christian Advocate, which is pub- lished from this office. He and his family since moving to Lakeland have been living in Dixieland. Plans are being prepared looking to the remodeling of the Kentucky building, for the purpose of furnish- ing enlarged and elegant quarters for the State bank. The stairway will ascend from the front of the building, instead of at the end of the hallway as at present; and the ispace occupied by the stairway and ‘part of the hall will all be thrown into the lobby and banking room of the bank. In addition to this, the room formerly .occupied as an ‘office by the Evening Telegram will Dbe used for the location of the vaults, directors’ room, etc. Banking fl)_(- tures of marble and of the most ele- gant design will be installed, and the State Bank will be in as hand- some quarters as any institution in this section, On account of ill health Mr. E. Tucker, Sr., is arranging his affairs with the view of taking an indefinite vacation and expects to spend the summer in the north and west. In order to be entirely relieved from the care of business he will retire from the practice of law, for the present, at least. The firm of Tucker & Tucker will therefore be dissolved, Mr. Eppes Tucker, Jr., taking over the entire business. 'The necessity for this step on the part of Judge Mucker is greatly deplored by his host of friends, as he has been iden- tified with the practice of law in Lakeland ever since the town exist- ed. It is earnestly hoped that change of air and scene and a com- plete rest from the cares and respon- sibilities of practice will enable him to recuperate sufficiently to resume the practice of the profession of which he has been so long one of the honéfed members in the State. fit of mankind. There was a big-hearted man in there, whose name 1 have long since forgotten, but he loved his fellow men, and took a special in- terest in boys, and especially boys who were drifting. 1 will never forget how his arm felt as it slipped about my shoulders, nor the kindli- | through to heaven if we do not try | pererenenenene Tnend to carry 5bii§~msts, our prejudices, 0 LTS A | our worldly goods with us. Whether or not I have succeeded is for others to say, but the evidence that I am trying is proven by my presence here. I have never been in a Y. M. (. A. meeting from that day until now —a lapse of more than thirty-five years. Since then whenever I have seen some boy or girl whose name 1 did not know, my heart has gone out in love ior them, and [ have always addressed them as “Kid.” This al- rays means that I love them. All this by way of explanation. In this connection, and hefore I resume my seat, [ wish to nominate | as permanent chairman of the Y. M. C. A. in Lakeland a man who, in many ways, reminds me of the 'big fellow in the Y. M. C. A. room in Kansas City, who slipped his strong arm about my shoulders and whispered in my ear, and called me “Kid;"” reminds me of the man who rescued the piece of human drift 'wood. The man T have in mind, and whom I am about to nominate, is one who loves his fellow man, and fwho, while I was for several years associated with him in some private ‘business matters, was constantly seeking to rescue some drift wood from the turbulent stream, which was ever running toward the sea. 'This man would make an ideal chair- man of an organization of this kind, and I, t‘leretore, have very great sat- isfaction’in nominating the Hon. H. D. Bassett.” Mrs, C. C. Wilson's Address To say that this is one of the hap- plest moments of my life does not in any measure express my feelings. Since I came to your city nine months ago and took a Sunday school class in the Presbyterian church 1 have been impressed with the need —the great need—of a Y. M. C. A. here. We have so many young men here without home ties and when not at work no place is open to them except places which will in time ruin the best man. I find here the best boys, taken as a whole, I have ever found anywhere—clean, ready to be shown the right way; anxious to further the Lord’s cause. We must remember our boys of today are our men of tomorrow. It is their due that they have the best that we can give them and I feel that in having a Y. M. C. A. here we can do more for them than 'in any other way. The money will 'come. When the dear Lord finds out 'his people are in earnest in trying to carry on his work the money comes. He sees to that.
