L il IMESSAGES BY STAMPS STILL POPULAR WITH FRIVOLOUS YOUNG PEOPLE. 1 Makes Much Trouble for the Post Of- fice Workers, But the Girls and Boys Will Use It So Here It Is. The demand for the stamp language bas been so incessant that I am forced ' to reprint it; but I warn you, every one, that it is positively for the last time. I cannot see why 8o many young people are possessed to carry out this code, that causes the poor postmaster and his assistants such trouble. I just wish all my correspondents could have heard the talk I heard re- cently by the postmaster of a small town. He told us how every stamp placed elsewhere than the upper right hand corner of an envelope caused a delay, and envelopes addressed in any but the proper way caused untold trou- bles to the postal clerk, and perhaps some of you do not know that the wee envelopes that just fit our visitingcards ! are put aside out of the ordinary rush | mail, as they have to be hand stamped. They are too small to go through the regulation stamp canceling machine and are left until some one has time to do them. I did not intend this to be & lecture, and here is the STAMP LANGUAGE. A stamp placed at the top right- hand corner means—Business; or I wish your friendship. Same corner, upside down—Write no more. Same corner, crosswise—I send a Kkiss. Same corner, horizontally—Do you i love me? . At the bottom right-hand corner— . You are cruel. Same corner, upside down—Can you not trust me? Same corner, horizontally—You are changed. In the middle, at right side—Write soon. Same place, upside SOITY. Same place, horizontally—I am mar- ried. At the top left-hand corner—Good- by, sweetheart. Same corner, upside down—I love you. Same corner, crosswise—My heart {8 another's. Same corner, horizontally—I you. At the bottom left-hand cormer—I seek your acquaintance. Same corner, upside down—I wish you joy. Same corner, horizontally—Will you | meet me? In the middle, at left side—Accept | my love. Same place, upside down—I am en. gaged. Same place, horizontally—I long to see you. In the middle at the top—Yes. Same place, upside down—On eondd- tions. Same place, horizontaly—Are you Jealous. In the middle at bottom—No. Same place, upside down—You are too loving. Same place, rents object. Of cowrse al these messages are carried by a single stamp—either a two-cent one fixed on a letter or a penny one on a postcard. Two penny stamps on a letter carry quite different sets of meanings, as the | following list will show: Two stamps at the top right-hand corner mean—Meet me tonight, same place. Same corner, father suspects. Same corner, crosswise—Danger. At the bottom right-hand corner— Going away. Same corner, upside down—See you on Sunday. ! Same corner, crosswise—Can I call? At the top left-hand corner—Why are you silent? Same corner, upside down—Do you love another? | Same corner, crosswise—Hope you are well. ! At the bottom left-hand corner— ! Don't forsake me. | down—I am hate horizontally—My pa- upside down—Your COMBINATION BAG AND MUFF Idea Evolved by Clever Woman fs Well Worth Being Copied and Is Easy to Carry Out. Starting out on a shopping expedi- tlon, one woman said to her friend: “Aren’t you going to carry your hand- bag?" “No,” replied the other, “I have made a bag in my muff, and it is much more convenient than carrying an extra one this cold weather, and the muff answers the purpose of both muff and bag.” She handed the muff to her compan- fon for inspection, says the Christian Science Monitor. In it were two bags or pockets. The first was large, being about two-thirds the size of one side | of the muff, and in this were slipped small packages, letters or anything of the kind that it was necessary to carry, and a large button securely | | fastened the lap which prevented any- thing from slipping out. Oa the outside of this large pocket was a small one for holding a little pocketbook and keys. This was also fastened with a large button and but- tonhole, so that the contents of the | pocket were secure and'this saved the [ carrving of a handbag, which was a | great convenience and enabled the ' owner of the muff to keep both hands | protected. Something That Anyone Can Make, and the Finished Article Will Be an Ornament to Any Boudoir. A novel little cushion, specially suit- able for safety pins, is shown in the accompanying sketch, and as it is made in the form of a horseshoe, it should bring good luck to its posses- 8or. In making it, in the first place a piece of stiff cardboard must be cut out in the shape of a horseshoe, and well padded with cotton wool on that side which is to be the front, and then covered with grey silk. The edges are next neatly finished off with a scarlet silk cord, and at the top of the shoe there is a smart bow of scarlet ribbon with a loop arranged above it, by which the cushion may be sus- pended from a nail in the wall. Other effective combinations {n which this little cushion might be car- ried out are blue silk with ribbon and cord of the same color, but in a darker shade or green silk, with ribbon and cord of an old gold color, or it would look pretty made entirely in one shade of almost any delicate color. A ring to hang it up by may take the place of the ribbon if preferred. No. 2 shows a very pretty and use- ful safety-pin holder, and is easily made from a yard of ribbon and five brass rings. The ribbon should be a pale tint, such a8 pale blue or a deli- cate pink, and it should be two inches wide. Cover the rings with a double crochet of black silk, or they can be covered by button-holing with black silk. The ribbon is cut into four strips, which are all different lengths, such as 12, 9, 6 and 3 inches respec- tively. Sew a riag at the end of each ribbon, the ribbon will have to be slightly fulled, as the width of it wil be wider than the ring. Now take the four pleces, neatly hem them at the top, and sew them together at the top, 8o that the longest piece of rib- bon 18 wmderneath aH the rest, the shortest on top, and the other two in similar order. Sew a ring to the top of the ribbons when they are put to- gether. The holder is now ready to receive the safety-pins, four different sizes can be hung. The top ribbon should have the smallest size, and the largest ribbon the largest. The holder can be hung up by the ring at the top; it will be found most useful on the dressing-table glass. Safety-pins are rather large to put on the usual pincushion, in any case, it does not allow of such choice as the holder. The ribbon the holder is made of, should match or tone with the gen- eral color scheme of the room for which it is intended. These holders will be found a valuable addition to baby's basket, and most useful when on a journey. Chinese Designs.
