A well dressed stranger, registered at the Kibler as A. F. Kurtz, Pennsylvania, with a confederate, whose name was not obtained, ap- proached a winter visitor in the city, Mr. Jacob Kroll in Munn park, ang laid before him a| proposition that would make him ricn in a very few minutes. Kurtz explained to Mr. Krowl that reports on horse races were being received at the Board of Trade rooms, and that he jhad some tips as to which horses woulj be the winners, and to prove what he said he gave a small amount of money to his confederate and told him to go down and bet on a certain horse. The latter soon returned with a big roll of money, ang Mr. |Kroll, who is an elderly man, want- ed to be shown, but they told him the Board of Trade had just closed, as its members were there betting privately, ang if Mr. Kroll would go to Kurtz's rooms at the Kibler they could get in communication the Boarl of Trade rooms by tele- phone. This they did, and| there Kurtz carried on an imaginary con- versation with the Board of Trade {rooms, in the meantime writing out |a check for $10,000 which he tried to induce Mr. Kroll to sign in or- der to protect their bet, which was to win for him $40,000 Mr. Kroll a short time before he signed the check, ang left the hotel. He con- sulted Municipal Judge Epps Tuck-!: er, Jr., who promptly recognizel the proceedings as a hold-up game, and had Kurtz placed under arrest. The latter gave bond in the sum of $100, which he forfeited in police court this morning, lcaving the Kibler via the back door route soon after his arrest, accompanied by his baggage, presumably to seek other and green- er pastures.
