An empty match box is almost al- ways thrown away as useless, yet from it can be made many useful and ornamental nick-knacks, that serve to make home more homelike. A very useful match-holder is easily made from an old match box and cardboard. Cut a piece of cardboard as in the sketch, and on it glue a moderate- sized box. Cover the cardboard and‘ box with any color of enamel, often | . there is enamel left over from other | purposes; these oddments come in! beautifully for this use as very little is | required. Be careful not to cover the strike side of the box, as, of course, that is needed. A tin or wooden empty box may be | used thus: If a wooden one, the strike side will in time wear away, | this can easily be v newed Py glueing | a bit of sandpaper+ r emery paper on i the side. For thosr who paint ever simple little flower on it, in any case, initials can always be put on, or the | word “Matches,” be written on. A very dainty little pincushion can be made very simply from an empty match box. Make a pad of wadding that will exactly fit on the top of the box, and cover with silk; glue it on very firm ly, finish off by narrow braid or cord carefully glued round the sides. Take tho drawer out, and glue some pretty pieces of €ilk round the sides. Dec- orate the two sides of the drawer that will show in the same way, and in the center of one end put a faney button, | or a boot button will do; by this | means the little drawer will easily come out, and will be found most uge- i ful for holding little buttons and all | kinds of small oddments. : Little trifies such as these can be made by those having little or nothing to spend on presents, and they will be found to be greatly appreciated both for their utility and daintiness. | NEW BLOUSE. i The smartest of the smart transpar- ent blouses this season are distin- guished by little waistcoats of moire. The one pictured here was made up in cream crepe with waist- coat of tangerine moire closed with moire-covered but- tons. The shirt front was cut of the crepe embroi- dered in narrow horizontal stripes and closed with a row of pearl bead buttons. The blouse portion was laid in small tucks on the shoulder and about the arm and is banded with | heavy cream lace. The soft collar is | edged by a plaiting of net; so also are the cuffs. FASHION HINTS For cotton waists the most favored ' materials are plain and fancy crepes, voiles, lace and net; for silk there are crepe de chine, chiffon, taffeta, China silk and satin, Blouses and dresses will be made of a wonderful whitp broche crepe that washes. Exceedingly fashionable are drop ornaments of every variety. Very new are the hats of tan straw trimmed with a touch of fur. The girdle ends of evening gowns are finished with long bead tassels. The newest handbags are of silk and should match the suit in color. The jaunty outing hat is trimmed | with broad, full feather quills. Barbaric necklaces of colored beads and odd-shaped lozenges are a fad, There are more velvet costumes worn on the street than any other | sort. The fashionable coiffure is adorn- ed with a flat band of pearls or bril- liants, There is a notable absence of the all-black costume and the black-and- white hat. Jeweled pins are among the popular coiffure ornaments for day and eve- ning wear. the Effect of Colors. | The stout woman should know that yellow increases her natural size. Satin also makes he look bigger. Blue is a slightly enlarging tone; white is stationary. Black, seal brown, navy blue and the deepest of crimsons are all tones that make the wearer look slimmer. New Cravat Pins. Some of the handsomest cravat pins are secured on the artistic safety pin mountings. The ornamental part of the pin, or head, is fixed on the head of the safety pin, which is of platinum or gold. EREERZ=LD (S Gl =434 ¥ EREDEEDERIRE B MARCH 2, 1914.
