An opportunity will be given the vis- ftors to the city to go aboard the war- ships which wifl tie up at the docks in this city, and there will thus be an educational feature to the celebra- tion, for it is an unusual opportunity for the people of inland towns to see the war boats. Fla. ewelers and Optometrists | the maids of honor, Could any better name have been chosen for a South Florida festival than the Gasparilla Carnival? Think ef the legends that gathee like mist over a bay head about the pame and fame of Gasparilla! Think of the possibilities for the bi- zarre and the unusual that the oM pi- rate's history mves! Think of the advertising value for South Florida there is in the name Gasparilla! Who or what is Gasparilla? asks the stranger within our gates. Is it a Pullman car or a breakfast tood or a cigar or a race horse? they ask. Listen, gentle stranger. Gasparilla was a pirate, and it is his exploits and history that furnigh the theme for the (Carnival Tampa is o give on February 21 to 24. Gasparilla was the name chosen for the pirate king and crev. The fam- ous sea rover’s name Las been made more famous by the band of Tampans and their celebration. and now, with all Florida joining in the celebration, and all the world contributing vistt- | ors, Gasparilla will become symboiic of the truly gal'ant cut-throat. Each year the members of the Gaspaillla | crew eleet their lsing and queen, and keeplng secret their choice uatil the night of the cor- onation ball. | |~ Then, amid the acclamation of their | subjects, pirates and honor guard, }&y:lkmj and queen are crowned, at the greatest social event of the year. Saven kings and queens have occupied the Gasparilla throne—ever since 1905, when that feature o(mthe rf:t: waé bit by the Gasparilla crew. One of the bloodiest of pirates, he gathered together hun- dreds of violent men and a dozen or e Al b e Nt iwm«mmmmwnmw so vessels and ruled as a king. In such a kingdom there is always dls- sension and Gasparilla, after a dis- agreement with Laflite over some of the loot, broke away from the band, took the ship he commanded and the bloody crew who d:d his biiding and sailed across the gulf to the coast of Florida. Pensacola was a settlement even then, but down the long stretch of the Florida coast there was hardly anoth- er bay that had even a fisherman's hut along the shoie. Hiding places there were in plenty among the keys and bays of the coast. Found Haven on Gasparilla Iste. On the island where the phosphate port of Boca Grande is now located, (Gasparilla found the haven he was seeking. It blocked one of the en- trances of Charlotte Harbor in any one of a dozen of whose smaller bays and creek mouths there was plenty ot chance for him to escape prying eyes. This must have been about the year 1800. Gasparilla built a mansion on the isle and here he lived ltke a king with his bloodthirsty pirates as the courtiers. There was not wanting ladies in thia eourt. Gasparilla had a great eye for femi \ nine beauty and his course of actlon | when taking a ship was always the “Overboard with the men; save the women'!” was his invariable order. But it was this practice that led to | his rain. His depredations were report- | ed to the United States government |and a frigate sent to the gulf waters I to run him down. | After a long chase through the Ten Thousand Islands, and up and down | the coast the pirate was cornered in | Lemon bay as lie was trying to make . his way through Gasparilla sound 1w ' Charlotte Harbor. A bloody battle ensued. The pirate was no coward and his crew fought, as they well knew, with halters around their necks. Few ‘were left, according to the tradition that nas yard arm of his own boat. One legend has it that the frigate burned out the pirates’ nest, root and branch, and destroyed the home. An- other story has it that it endured for many years though avoided by the oc- casional fishermen who landed on that coast, who felt that it was haunted. This story has it that the old piace was finally struck by lightning in one of the tropical storms that sometimes sweep the keys and destroyed. Certain it Is that it is gone, though old residents say remains of the place were still to be seen when they came into that country in the days of the Seminoles. I Treasure Seekers Pock Mark the Coast Kven now on Coral Creek, near Lemon bay, in sight of where the Char- lotte Harbor and Northern railroad takes to the water in the two mile crossing of Gasparilla sound, treas- ure hunters are secking $11,000,000 in buried gold, believed to have been the property of the dead pirate. It was buried in a long boat which was sheathed with cement, so the story goes to make it water tight, then sunk in the little creek. It is this story of Gasparilla that Ye Mystic Krewe which bears bis name keeps alive. Isn't it a great foundation for a Carnival? Could any better namne be designed? | come down.
