IELACS REMARKOBLE PROGRESS I PIST Yt HER RECORD FOR BUILDING AND IMPROVEMENT UNSURPASSED BY THAT OF ANY CITY OF HER CLASS IN THE COUNTRY Today as we celebrate the thirtieth | anniversary of Lakeland's birth, lt! is well to look back over the years that have gone and note the im- provements which have been wrought and which go to make up the biggest, best and most progres- sive inland city in all Florida—Live, Lovely Lakeland. In the years that have passed since Lakeland was nothing more than a wide place in the pike, there has been none in which greater growth and development have taken place than in the one just passed. During 1912 there were over a million dol- lars expended in new buildings, but during 1913, the grand total figures $1,794,000, which, as published be- fore, include the following: light ornamental street lighting standards, which has been put in by the property owners and business men, as well as the city authorities, at a total cost of nearly $4,000, and many other items of more or less. similar nature too numerous to men- tion, but the value of which in city building is just as great as the items above specified. A cold- blooded corporation does not spend money in a community without be- ing first absolutely assured of that community's future. As another evidence of Lakeland’s marvelous progress we may call at- 2 tention to the fact that although an |} average of one residence a day has been maintained in the building of homes for the housing of our people during the year, it is almost impos- sible to rent one today and many people are crowded in furnished rooms and hotels awaiting comple- ern type and carrying a (-omploto‘ stock as those found in cities twenty times the size, good hotels, including the new and strictly modern fire- proof hotel recently erected at a cost of over $125,000; strong, substan- tial and accommodating banks, a typical postoffice department, some of the finest and most modern homes in the south, miles of paved streets already laid and more to come, splen- did natural drainage and system of sanitary sewerage, the best water in the country, the largest auditorium (Continued on Page b.)
