Ing q_eninu ‘ielem_'_am b, G Published every afternoon from the| The other day in Evansville, Ind., a drummer committed suicide and had no better reason for his rash act thanthat given in a note he left on the table, in which he curtly stated that he was “tired of the game.” He was a bachelor in good circumstances and good health, and his accounts e e e e e e Entered in the postoffice at Lake- land, Florida, as mail matter of the second class. —— M. The Telegram recently had a brie paragraph referring to the order of the commission, and Mr. Edwards has erroneously construed that para- graph as a definite expression of opinion on our part that the order ‘was not founded in good policy or igood judgment. We merely said in 'substance that it would be difficult to enforce it, as taxpayers, nearly always kickers and quibblers in the assessment of their property, had been so long accustomed to a low rate of valuation that their attitude would make it difficult to carry out the new ruling for a true cash as- sessment, Mr. Edwards will doubt- less concede that this is, true, and that was as far as we went. We feel sure that the commission- ers have performed their difficult task guided by their best judgment and conscience and that they have tried faithfully to remedy certain no- torious defects in our assessment sys- tem and to equalize as far as possi- ble the burden of taxation. We give them full credit in this direction and we trust that their work will be found to have provided the needed remedy. But until that remedy has been actually tried we will not know if it is a success, and we can only wait to find out. » SRR Many of our Florida weekly ex- changes are coming to us now in beautiful, highly colored Christmas coverings, but to the initiated this i no evidence whatever that the edi- tors themselves aice strolling around in edition de-Inx cvercoats.
