HETHERINGTON, EDITOR. SUBSCRIPTION RATES. From the same office is issued THE LAKELAND NEWS, A weekly newspaper giving a resume of local matters crop conditions, county affairs, etc. Sent anywhere for $1.00 per year. We hand our congratulations and best wishes to Will Bulloch upon suc- ceeding to the editorial management! of the Mulberry Herald. It was good before, but he has improved it, and it is now a paper that would be al credit to a town several times the size of Mulberry. n. State Game Commissioner Jones is an enthusiast on his new job and is| giving a good account of himself. Op to Dec. 1 nearly $30,000 had been collected for hunters’ licenses in | the various counties of the State and in fifteen counties there have been | fifty-two convictions for violating the game laws and seventy-five alleged violations are now awaiting trial. This is a fine showing, something al- together new in Florida, and Mr. Jones is proving himself an efficient! officer. | i And the earth suddenly opened and swallowed him up and he was, geen no more nor was the sound of his voice heard in the land. That geems to have been the fate of our | friend Bill Sulzer up in New York who found so much glory in the:: shame of his impeachment that he; went on the Chautauqua circuit to| gather in the shekels and the plaud- Over in Escambia county the sheriff seems to be on a hot griddie because the commissioners have been investigating his accounts and havé discovered among other things that he has charged for more than a thou- sand miles of travel in serving papers when the testimony shows that less than one hundred miles were trav- eled. The sheriff lays it all to his chief deputy, disclaims all personal knowledge of the subject and says | he will pay back the excess collected. The governor has been asked to have the matter investigated. It is intol- erable that the taxpayers should have to stand for the collection of money by officers to which they are not entitled, and this exposure of condi- tions in the sheriff’s office in Escam- bia will do good, as all such ex- posures do, in giving officials to un- derstand that the people will find out sooner or later whether the men they elect to office are holding that office as a public trust or a private snap. O The Palatka News has made the timely discovery that W. C. Temple, suggested by the Tampa Tribune as ‘a good South Florida man for sen- ator, is not a Democrat. It is ap- palling to think of electing this care- | fully concealed Republican to the | United States Senate by the votes of our noble Democratic yeomanry and discovering when it was too late that he was a Trojan horse. That would have been a horse on the Democratic party, sure enough. William Chase Temple, you can now retire. You have been unmasked in the nick of time, and amid the umbrageous soli- tudes of your Orlando orange grove and the wreck of your unholy designs upon the pure, chaste, virgin Democ- ,racy of Florida you can repent of your sins and meditate on the mu- tability of human affairs. —0 The Supreme Court of Georgia is now wrestling with the difficult question of whether or not Leo ‘Frank, convicted of the murder of Mary Phagan, and under sentence of death, is entitled to a new trial. Con- e prove himself gutitiess. A NOTE OF THANKS We desire to express our thanks and heart-felt gratitude to all sympathy and helpfulness during our recent affliction in the tragic death of our little boy. Words are inade quate to express all that your kindly considerations have meant to us. \God bless you all. WM. LOHR AND WIFE. MRS, H. C. TERRY.
