We don’t remember the paragraph, but we will resign our membership in the Spug Society and send you a nice little Christmas gift if you will quote anything from this paper justifying your statement that the Telegram ‘“‘takes pleasure’” in the matter you refer to. —0 The Georgia papers are good enough to join in a general warning to us of Florida that the yeggs are through with their emgagements in that State and have departed for our milder climate. Thanks for the warning, and banks and postof- fices all over the State would better govern themselves accordingly. In all seriousness, the safe blowers have been very active and very successful in Georgia lately and that they will extend their gctivities to Florida is practically certain. i S0 The Punta Gerda Herald wants to THE NEW AFTERNOON DAILY IN JACKSONVILLE 1 THE EVENING TELEGRAM, LAKELAND, FLA., DEC. 15, 1913. are some men whose superficial ap- ;‘Q fRuReReRe R R R R R R R Ry R T pearance belies them, and Gilchmt.fi -1 is one of these. A The Christmas editions of Florida papers, daily and weekly, are piling up on us and, without excep- tion they are hizhly creditable in looks and contents and speak vol- umes for the spirit and enterprise of the Fourth Estate of Florida. The press of Florida is prospering, else there could te no such Christmas edi- tions of the Klorida papers; and a Prosperous press means a prosperous people. All hail to our brethren in the great work and a merry Christ- mas to every one of them! !y WA The Florida Metropolis joins with the Telegram in welcome to James Whitcomb Riley who is located in|; Miami for the winter, where we trust his muse is keeping company with him and will inspire him to at least one poem breathing the spirit of Florida and as suggestive of her characteristics as some of those im- mortal rhymes he has written have done for his native Indiana. Quoting our paragraph, the Metropolis adds: “Miami is fortunate, indeed, in having the grand old man of poetry as her winter guest. More people have read and loved the poems of Riley than the verse of any other|: living poet. He has not been laur- eated by a nation, but he is loved wherever poetry is read. He has put more songs in human hearts than any other living man, and in the sum of happy human achievement his glory is greater than that of any king, czar, emperor, president or po- tentate in the world. All of us who belong to the great, grand army of poesy take off our hats to James Whitcomb Riley. May Florida’s cli- mate add a score to his years.” . R e We have a positive passion which we have never been able to limit or control for helping to circulate the good things said about good people, and for that reason we reproduce from the Orlando Sentinel the follow- ing tribute to Former Governor Gil- christ, although by no means en- dorsing the witticism of Morton Rid- dle, borrowed, by the way, from a famous Englishman of two centuries ago. Says the Sentinel: “It is pleasing to observe most of the comment on the retire- ment of Albert W.
