Knowing that the line was confined to us and ghat the price quoted by this store was far below the cost of production, we sent a copy of the ad to the Edwin Clapp Shoe Company for an explana- tion, hence the following letter: Edwin Clapp & Son, Anc. East Weymouth, Mass., Nov. 25, 1913, Bailey Clothing Co., Lakeland, Fla. Gentlemen: Replying to your favor of the 21st regarding the advertisement, copy of which you enclosed, will state that we have not sold this party any goods, and know of no one that has ordered any for them. We certainly would not sell any one cur line of goods to be haadled in your city, as long as you continue to represent us. If you learn of these peo- ple having in their possession any of our goods, and can procure the numbers stamped on the lining, and send us, we will investigate, and find out from what source these goods were obtained, and if any one is buying of us at an- other location and re-shipping them to Lakeland, we will immediately order them returned, and discontinue selling them, unless they will promise not to repeat the action. It is possible that they may have obtained some of our goods in some bankrupt estate, but this we cannot determine until we are in possession of the numbers' of the shoes, which they are offering for sale. Assuring you of every effort on our part to solve the problem for you, we remain Very truly yours, EDWIN CLAPP & SON, Inc. Now, if Mr. Moore secured these shoes in the purchase of some old bankrupt stock--as suggested by the Clapp Shoe Co.--and is anxious to dispose of them on account of age or old antiquated styles, it is no business of ours if he can put off this kind of merchandise on the public. We simply publish the above to take care of and defend the high grade Lines of Merchandise that we carry confined to us by the Manufacturers.
