Mother wouldn’t let me g0 without a chaperon, so Harry's mother said she'd be it!” Then the little blond girl subsided into the depths of the big chair, busily sewing blue roses of ribbon. “It'll be wonderful!” sighed the girl with the big white apron, who was embroidering. “Did you see our club corner? It's by far the prettiest of all—and it’s just full of retreats where you can sit out dances!” she sighed again, and put down her work while she looked out of the window dream- ily. “What I'm looking forward to is the moon dance!” exclaimed the girl who was making buttonholes in a new shirt walst. “You know, every light is to be turned out except that great big moon right over the pine trees corner—and we're going to have the club song played, and oh, it'll be heavenly! I'm so glad I'm going with Fred because he's such a perfect waltzer! Honest- ly, I wouldn't care much if I didn’t have another dance on the program but that moon dance!” “Yes, it's all true, and I just don’t know which part of it I'm looking for- ward to most!” exclaimed the girl who was too lazy to sew and who frankly admitted it. “I'm going to wear old rose, and Tom has promised to bring me bride roses, and mother is going to let me wear her pearls, and I'm just so happy that I'm afraid I'll wake up! Do you ever feel afraid for that reason?” “What a foolish lot of children you are!” exclaimed the cynical girl, who sat somewhat apart from the others. The cyincal girl was darning stock- ings. “Before I'd make such a fuss about a dance! Fancy thinking it's something great to dance in the glow of some yellow paper thing over an electric light!” She smiled in a very superior way. “Aren't you coming?” exclaimed sev- eral amazed voices at once. “No, I don't care to go,” replied the “I'm Going to Stay at Home.” cynical girl, easily. “I'm going to stay at home and have & sensible time.” “What on earth will Bob do if you don't go?" exclaimed a wondering voice. The question was taken up by the others. “What girl will Bob take?” asked one. “I don’t know—perhaps that horrid Smithers girl.” The tone of the cyni- cal girl was even and disinterested. “Oh!” there was inspiration in the tone. “I have an idea. Harry's cous- {n is coming and Harry has been try- ing ever so long to get some one for him. Since you don’'t want to go with Bob"—she put it nicely—“why don’t you go with us?” The cyinca! girl hesitated. “Why, yes, I could,” she said, slowly. Then she smiled. “Goodness! Only two days and I baven't a thing prepared! Whatever'll I wear!” She flung into the bag the stocking she was darning and moved interestedly toward the little blond. “1 think I'll make one of those for my hair, too,” she said. “It'll go well with my old gold dress. Say, tell me, is Harry's cousin awfully attractive?” She smiled meditatively. “I belleve I can make Bob sit up and take no- tice,” she said, softly. “Smithers! what a name!” Then she turned to the other girls. “I can hardly walt!"” she exclaimed. Nor did she blush at the smiles that went around. “I'm fust dying for the time to pass!”—Cii- eago Daily News. Ready to Die With His Boots On. On the most trying occasions, the coolness of the duke of Wellington was perfect. The instance given by Colonel Gurwood is quoted in Life. The duke was once in great danger of being drowned at sea. It was bed- time when the captain of the vessel eame to him and said: “It will soon be all over with us.” “Very well,” answered Wellington, *then I shall not take off my boots."— Youth's Companion.
