HETHERINGTON, EDITOR. BuCRIFIION RAVHE [T e 3 : (R 1 resnm . IF:the on. R. P. Hobgon, of Ala bama, has been reading tiie raners ol | all shades of political opinion la itely | he is probably in a very thoughtful and sabdued state of mind and won- derin: why op earth he made such an enthusiastic and gratuitous uss of himself as to charge Oscar Under- wocd on the floor of Contvress with being the tool of Wall Street. To charge George Washington with be- ing the tool of tue King of kngland at the conclusion of the Revolution- ary war would have beep about as intelligent and truthful. 7 ST It has recently been published widely in the State press that under a late law of Congress it was unlaw- ful to kill wiid ducks at any season in Florida, although under the State law there was no such prohibition and it was permissible to kill such fowl between Nov. 20 and Feb. 20. That being true, the federal law would of course be paramount and all killing of wild ducks would be un- lawful at any time. It seemed a strange and harsh provision and we note that a correspondent of the De- Land Record who has examined the federal law says that the published statement of it is a mistake. He finds that law makes provision by which it is legal to shoot wild ducks in what is knowp as Zone 2 or the wintering zone from Oct. 1 to Jan. 15. Florida is ip that zone, so the duck hunters can go ahead and kill the birds between those dates. If Citrus county makes ay exhibit in the Ocala fair the big snake killed by Charley Brooks will be sent there, but not as a Citrus county product, Inverne s Chronicle. But why send the snake at all? It will be credited to some part of Flor- fda as an exhibit at a county fair of one ol the products of our State and will disgust and horrify everybody that at it. An excellent way to scare off intending immigrants from o county is to show them rattle- snakes as the natural products of thit county, and one such snake ex- 18 hil the best ailvantaze can larcel uneatralize all the efforts of a high-c immicration acent to bring in new settlers. Up in Santa Rosa county where they have recently held a boys’ corn club contest, is was discov- ered that James Rezinal McViekers, the boys of the club, had growy 182 bushels of corn on one acre the past season, with Malcoim Miller a close second with 165 bush- els on one acre. Commenting op this the 1 'nsacola Journal says: “Those Sau'a Rosa scheol bo:s cught to put some of our mey farm- ers to n 1f 182 bushels ot corn ean be grown by a boy, an equal amount ought to be growy by a man. And if 182 bushels can be grown on one acre, the same number can be grow on another acre. Also it ought to be more profitable for a farmer to grow 152 hushels of corn on one acre thap to cultivate from four to ten acres for tl'e same number of bush- els.” one o. — Over In I'ensacola the saloon men, | who are doing business by the suf-! ferance of a very narrow majority o.'[ the popular vote in Escambia coun-/ ty, have applied to the city ment for permission to extond their time for closing their doors at nizht covern- from ten o'clock until midunizht.
