PAGE LEVEN 0 GHENT HIiSTGRIC OLD TOW'»I Famous Treaty Between United Statea and England Was Signed Here in 1814, Ghent.—Of all the old world towns of continental Europe, none {8 more hallowed by historic associations than the history-making, gray old city of Ghent—midway between the Belgian capital and Bruges. Here, the mag- nificent World exhibition, which will continue throughout the summer months, has just been opened by Al bert, king of the Belgians. Of all the million visitors who are expected to visit the city this year, none perhaps will feel a more inti- mate interest than those from Great Britain and America—for here in 1814 was signed the famous treaty which gave to the United States and Canada Courts of Justice, Ghent, & hundred years of peaceful inter course. The historic spot—51 Rue des Champs, where stood the original building, the famous “Champs hotel,” wherein negotiations took place, is now occupied by a large and very up-1 to-date shop. Time was when Ghent rivaled Ven- ice in romantic interest. Made great by wars in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, “la ville de Flore,” as she was then known, was queen of north- ern Kurope.
