FAVORS A COUNTY FAIR Editor Telegram: As a regular reader of your paper since I have been here, I have noticed various propositions suggested for advertis. ing this section, which were all good, but there is one that I have never seen mentioned, which I be- lieve will do more to advertise Lakeland and Polk county than all the others combined. The proposition I refer to is a county fair, to be held sometime during the winter, about the middle of January, when the majol:v.y of the tourists are in the State. Now, I just write this to intro- duce the subject, and if you think anything of it. I will, on request, outline a plan I have in view, whereby I believe it could be made self supporting. Yours truly, “Newcomer.” ACKNOWLEDGE IT L Lakeland Has to Bow to the Inevit- able—Scores of Citizens Prove It . After reading the public state- ment of this representative citizen of Lakeland given below, you must come to this conclusion: A remedy which proved so beneficial years ago with the kidneys, can naturally be expected to perform the same work in similar cases. Read this: Mrs. W. BE. Browning, 228 E. Tennessee avenue, Lakeland, Fla., says: “I think that the uric acid in my system was the cause of my poor health. About a year ago one of my fingers began to swell and be- came very stiff. I went to a doc- tor, but he could not do anything for me and as one of my relatives had been cured of kidney disease by Doan’s Ridney Pills, I thought that it might be well for me to try them. I got a box and soon after using them I improved. I gladly confirm my former statement tn which I told of my ‘experience With Doan's Kid- ney Pillg. 1T still use this remedy occasionally and it always brings the best results.” For sale by all dealers. TOAD’S VENOM EXCITES HEART Dr. Rowntree of Johns Hopkins Discovers a New and Power ful Stimulant. Philadelphia—Dr. L. @. Rowntree, a young scientist of Johns Hopkins uni- versity, who formerly practiced fm Camden, N. J., left Philadelphia for Europe, taking with him a box of [ gantic South American toads. These animals secrete a particularly vire- lntvmmlnmehrgodlndln each side of the head. When at tacked, they have the power of efect- Ingt t.ll;!u poison with deadly estimated that a dose §f one thousandth of a &ram will throw a guines pig into violent convulsions and ultimately cause death. The deadliness of this toxin closely ap- proximates that of the protein extract of the castor bean, called “ricin,” hitherto the most deadly potson known. The scientific name for these ereatures is agua marinus. They are 8ald to reach sometimes a length of ‘| elght inches and to prey upon fleld rats and small birds. Dr. Rowntree discovered in exper- menting that the poison is a heart stimulant, acting directly upon the cardiac muscle, when administered in sufficient dilution. It is declared that in the future this drug will supplant digitalis and other heart stimulants because of its greater potency and the ease with which quantities of it can be obtained. Hitherto reptilian or amphibian yenoms never have been extremely used in medical practice, as they are prone to cause what is known as “haemolysis,” or destruction of the red blood corpuscles and subsequeat fatal anemia. Dr. Rowntree thinks he has solved this problem, for he says that his preparation exhibits none of the properties. The doctor expects to visit Mumich and some of the other great medica! centers of Germany, in order to dem- onstrate his discovery.
