You can say what you please || about taking ‘medical trestment for : | the habit, but hard work is the only uwnn THEIR WAY TC LIBERTY FROM BARTOW JAIL At the noon hour yesterday in' the county fail at Bortow while the pris- oners were being fed, three negro prisoners—Kid Lucky, Will Wil liams and’ Will | Fields—and two white prisoners—J. E. Fields and Pat Rysn—made their escape. The alarm' ‘was ‘instantly = given, men went in pursuit and Ryan was over- hauled about half*way between Bar- tow and Lakeland. At this writing none of. the other escapos hava been recaptured although vigorous search is being mcde all through the sur- rounding country by deputies and citisons, Guards have been thrown out around a nearby swamp where it is belioved the jailbirds are hiding and ¢t is thought they wil be brought in in & few horrs. The escape oo~ curred through the help of a negro trusty, who aided tho prisoners to saw through the bars on the morth side of the jail. IT 18 A VIOLATION OF STATE LAW The Herald would not for any consideration prevent the young peo- ple of this city from enjoying any legitimate pleasure, but it feels con- stralned to call attention, once more, to the fact that children not ower 14 or 15 years of age are permitted to drive automobiles on the streets of the city and the roade of the county. A young girl, not a day over 14, was observed very recently driving one of the large automobiles on the streets, unaccompanied by an older person. This is a direct vio- lation of the State law. The law is a wise one and #t should be ob- served. No person who has not ar- rived at the age of 18 years, and very few at that age, is competent to handle safely any automobile on the crowded streets or elsewhere. That an an accident has not yet oc- curred, resulting from the practice of permitting children to handle au- tomobiles, is merely good fortune, and nothing else. If the practice is continued, there is not the slightest doudbt that a serious accident, in which-lives will be lost, will oecur. When that event tramspires, there will be plenty of people to condemn the practice who now merely wink at it. When that accident does Oc- cur, the authorities who are charged with the enforcement of that and all other laws will be held morally responsible for whatever happens. Prado is now apparent- ly entirely cured of the habit. About ‘sixty-three days ago Prado was sen- tenced to serve ninety days in the city prison farm by Judge W. W. Anderson, in accordance with the new method that has been adopted by the city for the treatmen of such characters. He was deprived of the drug at once and given hard work to occupy his time, and plenty of good wholesome food. When he had served sixty days of the time he had gained forty-five pounds. There were “corns™ in his bands from the work he had done, and not only had the dark circles disappeared from bo- neath his eyes, but he was sun- burned and healthy looking. Some of the police officers ¢id not recog- mise him as the former “dope” fiend Prado will leave for New York this afternoon on a ship of the Clyde line, Hg says he s going back to his mother. Anderson secured Prado’s release on learning of the change which had occurred.-— TimeaUnion. MAMMOTH OWL IN HEN HOUSE Mr. J. W. Morley, who lives on the corner of Columbus avenue and Laurel street and who has a choice flock of White Leghorns, was awak- ened about 2 a. m. Wednesday by a commotion in his fowl house. He hurried there to ascertain the cause and discovered a dark looking bird acting as ringmaster of the perform- ance. Mr. Morley made a grab for the intrucer and was in turn caught in the strong talons of a mammoth owl, which held each of his hands in a vice-llke grip. Wrenching his right hand free, he scized the owl’s head and after a few vigorous twists his owlship released his grip and fell to the ground lifeless. The owl measured 50 inches from tip to tip of his wings, and had very large, sharp clews. Mr. Morley's hands were badly lascerat«d in the fight, bat he says he is stilf fn the ring.— St. Andrews Herald.
