DEPARTMENT SOPEOPEOSSTIIOPIIIS LSS The Woman’s Christian Temper- ance Union held an interesting pro- gram meeting with Mrs, L. B. Bevis Tuesdny afternoon. The prin- cipal topic for the meeting was a study of our declaration of princi- ples, and the W. C. T. U. cate- chism, which gives the origin and plans of work of the W, C. T. U. The national organization was made in November, 1874. The pledge is “I hereby solemnly promise, God helping me, to nbstaia from all dis- tilled, fermented and malt liquors, including wine, beer and cider, and to employ all proper means to dis- courage the use of and traffic in the same.” T e badge I8 a bow of white ribbon, which {8 symbolic of purity and peace. Our motto: “For God and Home and Native Land.” The noontide hour is the time appointed for each while ribboner to lift her heart in prayer to God for His blessing on the work and workers, and for the overthrow of the liquor traffic. The W. C. T. U. is organized in every State, territory and depend- ency of tLe United States including the District of Columbia, Alaska, Hawalii, Canal Zone and the Philip- pines. The lines of work are or- ganization, preventive, educational, evangelistic, social and legal. These being divided into forty-five differ- ent departments. Some other read- ings were given. One from Mrs. Ohlinger, “Miss Senator, Mrs. Com- missioner and Ladies of the Jury,” being descriptive of the proeress of woman suffrage in the west, there being nire States granting suffrage to women. Mrs. Adair read “The Trail of the Snake.” Mrs. Morse read “Prof. A. Booze Hitter.” Mrs. Bevis read a clipping from the Tam- pa Tribune stating the fact that “drunkards are getting scarcer.” Another reading was in regard to the Catholic Total Abstainers in big convention declare for the education of the masses in regard to the liquor question. Anothr clipping was read. A clipping from the LakelandEven- ing Telegram in which the Gains- ville Sun wishes to know “why the mothers don’t see that the cigarette law is enforced.” Again the mothers in one united voice rise to inquire: “Where are the fathers? Have the fathers no Interest in thir sons? They are on the streets and see these boys smoking and in many cases have an idea, if they do not know, where they get the cigarettes. We have officers who are given office with the expectation that they will enforce the law. If they do not know how t~ do it, they might ask the Miami officers. They found a way. For fear some of our mer- chants and our officers may have forgotten the law and the penalty attached we request our editor to again kindly print it that they may have no excuse. The meeting was closed with the Lord’s Prayer and adjourned to meet Sept. 2 with Mrs. J. W. Turner. The hostess served refresh- ing lemonade and cakes. MRS. H. B. MORSE, Press Superintendent.
