The asphalt makes & beautiful street, and, while a lit- tle more expensive, its beauty and the absence of dust and noise make everyone highly pleased with it. Wherever the streets have been Iald the high weeds between the sidewalks and the pavement should be cut down and that space planted in nice grass. Each property own- er should take a pride in ecomplet- ing the work of making Lakeland a City Beautiful, by transforming the space between the sldewalks and | the street into a thing of beauty instead of an eyesore, and we feel sure they will. It would not be wise to put anything of the kind in the park while hoboes and night work- ers are allowed full possession at night after decent people have gone to their homes. This is a move in the right di- rection by the Carpenters’ Union, and, by the way, not the first time they have manifested a public spirit and contributed of their means for & good cause. KANSAS TRAINS STALLED BY GRASSHOPPERS Dodge City, Kan., Aug., 1—"Train No. 664 delayed forty minutes; stalled by grasshoppers.” This was the report received at the Rock Island Adepot here today. The train was coming out of Ford when it struck a deep cut where “hoppers’” covered the rails. As the engine wheels crushed the insects, the rails became 8o slippery that the drivers spun around and the train stopped. The crew with shovels finally scooped the hoppers off the track and covered the rails with sand, then the train could proceed. 'J. P.
