Editor Telegram: Among the hun- Areds of letters I have received in an- swer to ap article of mine publisked i Home and Farm last fall, deserib- ing South Florida and especially Polk county, was one from Prof. J. W. M, Thornton, from Pittsburg, Miss. Mr. Thornton wrote me that he wanted to come to Florida, cou- tinue his life-work, farming and teaching, build a home and be happy the remainder of his days. As a result of our correspondence, Mr. Thornton came to Fla., took the Rtview Course for Teachers in Rol- lins college, wrote the examination for a teacher's certificate last week and is now ready for business. He has been tendered the principalship of town schools, but declines, prefer- ring to teach in some remote country place, as he feels there is where he is veeded most, This is a praise-worthy spirit. The like of Thornton will make the “‘country” part of Polk great. | hope we can land him, May his tribe increase rapidly and large!y. “The old man,” as Mr. Thornton was called at Rollins college, is a thing of a genius and a genial, hap- py spirit, not much of a “poet,” h¢ says. The following lines, called his “Pre-Florida Vision,” were written | before he left his Mississippi home. Now that he is in Florida drinking in her greatness, her enchantiny beauties and is intoxicated on her in- spiring atmosphere, we expect him to write some real poetry, | will dwell in the land of flowers, Ang rest under the shady bowers; I will dine on the festive ’possurn, And smell the fragrant orange blos- som, 1 will on sparkling lakes go boatin; And watceh the aligators floatiniyg, 1 will cast my hook and fly about, And troll for the wily, flounging trout, 1 will bring to pass my pet notion To stand on the edge of the ocean; 1 will view the ships with masts and spars, Against heaven's vast and twinkling stars. I will row about upon the gulf, And will get pleasure enough; With hook, rod reel and harpoon I will land the giant Tarpon. I will visit the groves of all kinds L will hunt the wild game of the hills, And fish in the waters of the rills. 1 will plant corn, peas and velie* beans, And have chickens, ducks and tur- keys. Seems I will try raising sweet potatoes, Peans, cabbage, cucumbers and matoes. . to I will watch how the procession rune, And will see how my profession sums; 1 will try not to be an aggressor, But an humble teaching professor. I will endeavor to succeed with my work, And will the humblest task try not to shirk; I will try to do all things well, For in Florida I wish to dwell. ROBERT JONES, Eukalypta Kabin, Polk County.
