WHY SLEK 10 LiS{UR3 Subhaivnlal EARMONY? We know of no reason why cer- tain newspapers in Klorida should be persistently iuduiging in invidious comiuicnt on our two senators in Washington, apparently seeking to create the impression that Senator Bryan is not getting a fair deal at the hands of the press in this State and that Senator Fletcher employs a ! press agent to constantly keep his boss in the limelight of favorable publicity. This is all very absurd and unjus. and it cught to stop. There is no dii ference in ecither the vrincipies or the policies advocated by our two senators in Washington. They are both good, clean men seeking Ao serve their constituents with no eseential difference in e od, and we have never heard or sus- pected that they are not in entire harmony in their senatorial duties. in fact, the evidence is just to the eontrary. Scnator Bryan has noth ing on Senator Fletcher in becoming modesty and the latter is as guiltless ! of a press acent as the former. Senator Ileteiier is a considerabiy older mun than his collcague; weni to the Scnuate several years before the latter did, wnd with that advantag fn scniority wnd cxperience he se- cured w : in the senate anq re the countey which wa by rithit undor the civenmstanc il which irplics po disparagement of our jiunicr senntor. In addition Sen- ator I'leteher is a man of very su- perior abifity and hizh eharaeter and he Lad sivongly jmpressed himselt upon both th nate and the coun- try belors My, van's cleetion, Sure- ly that should be put down to his credit hy the pe they should and do take a just pride fn the reputation he has made in the United States Senate. Scuator Bryan Las his opportun- ity witnout let or hindrance from bis collcague; Le has a fine, engag- ing scnality, youth, ambition and talent; and with both seaators work- fng in harmouy to a common end there is no just reason why that har- mony should be disturbed by gratui- tous criticism in the rear seeking to put them in an attitude of quasi hos- tility to each other, which might re- sult in two perfectly unnecessary and fllogical factions in Florida Democ- racy. Senator Fletcher and Senator Bry- @B are both progressive Democrats i1 full sympathy with President Wil- oon’s administration and with the party in Florida, and that one is the senlor of the other in years and sen- atorial experience and enjoys certain advantages inevitably resulting from ple of that difference can’t be tortured by ' any sort of scphistry into a legiti- mate grievance by the friends of our Junior senator. —_—— It scems strangze that the Ropub-' Mecan standnat State of Pennsylvania, where the old order ruleth and mod- ern progcressive political doctrines are not supposed to be shou!d get ahead of Florida in rati fying the proposed amendment to the federal constitution providing for the election of United States scnators by direct vote of the people. But that very thing has happened, the Pennzylvania Lecislature taking such action only a few days aco. will only be necessary for a few more States tn take similar action to make the amendment a part of the consti- tution, and in order that Florida mav mot be the tail of the procession the Legislature which meets next Tues- day shonld ratify the amendment the ' firet day of the session. There need be no debate about it; the case is too plain. _— The formal cpening of the home for surerannnated ministers of the .
