Cut brocaded velvet and heavy silk plush with silver filigree fastenings make handsome bags for the middle aged woman. They are capacious enough to hold handkerchief, eye- glasses or lorgnette, coin purse and other small articles. Pocketbooks of the same materials with a half a dozen different compartments, the middle one clasped shut, are also made now and can be carried in the larger handbags. Silk and plush purses, something like the reticules carried by women a generation or two ago, purses about ten inches long and three inches wide, with a clasp at eacl end and a steel ring in the center to slip over the finger, are especially convenient to carry in the muft, Handles on the new hand bags do not reach the absurd length usual last year. They are still long, some of them two or three feet. Leather bags frequently have handles of silk cords, and velvet and chenille cord, A new handle i{s made of black taffeta silk shirred over heav:' cord. Crown of Tulle, Alry black tulle is a millinery whim of the between-season time, and these black tulle hats are precursors of the spring, for it is said that much tulle and malines will be used this year. One model is small black satin; one with a large wired melon crown made of two layers of black malines over the lower crown of black satin. Wide loops of the doubled malines nestle | against the malines crown at one side and give softness of outline to the hat, which accompanies a new lingerie frock of cotton voile, zigzag cloth and fine machine embroidery. For Basket Cuitists, For the basket cultists—meaning those girls who adore anything that is dainty and tiny in the shape of woven whites—are fetching affairs for fancy work in split bamboo with shirred tops of Japanese silk. Also 0dd and lovely are the empire baskets in split, made fluffy looking and useful because fill- ed with a silk covered pincushion that is scentcd with dried rose leaves. Even more alluring are the “little brown jugs” of woven hemp which cov- er glass bottles of cologne. Vests Popular, Pretty little vests of a contrasting i color and material ar= much seen in | the spring gown models. This fancy gives an opportuniiy for lightening a dark costume with a becoming toush of color, and for adding a delicate | touch to a heavy material by the use ! of chiffon, net, or siik.
