The trial and conviction of a ne- gro for criminal assault on a white voman in Marion county within three days after his arrest last week and his sentence to be hanged Wednesday of this week has precipi- tated a newspaper discussion, iy be- ing insisted one side that the speed o' the proceedings was incousistent with legal decorum in a case of such gravity. That an issuc of this kind should be made is surprising, for to us it seems that the prompt dispo- sition of the Marion county case should be matter for gencral re- joicing, becausg it suved thag county from the disgrace of a lynching and brought (he swirt vengeance of the law upon a wretch in whose behalf not one word of defense or excuse could be uttered The right disposition of cases of this character. 1o the end that such crimes may be made as infrequent as possible and the fullest protec- tion of the law be thrown around our women is a matter of superlative importance, and the speediest possi- ble trial consistent with law and' the early infliction of the death pene alty is certainly one means to that end. The Tampa Tribune in replying to the Times of that city on this ques- tion handles it so clearly and con- clusively as to leave no doubt that it has the right side of the issug and expresses the best thought of the State on the subject. After noting that the negro had been duly indict- ed by the grand jury and that the | mob was hungry for the vriminul,l the Tribune says: “The trial followed immediately, ' the prisoner being represented h.\': counsel, appointed by the court, We | have the word of the Ocala papers | for it that every opportunity was | given the prisoner to seenre wit-| nesses and compel their ;nn-mi:mw.] He had no defense The ovidence was conclusive, including fdentification by the vietim was the oceasior could ha« of justice or | | the trial o w month, or| awaiting 1he ar sitting of the grand jury? * * = | “The Tribune the | only method of preventine lynchings | in this State is the method adopted by Hillsborouzh connty, in the cpee | of Anderson. and by Marion county, | positive What What I bgained for the cause for delay? Hanity hy postponin or a believes that Delaying such plain and conclvsiv, cases merely fans public discontent with the procedure of the courts. We should hate to think that r. Stagg, the fine old Presbyterian minister in Orlando, had deliberately crected himself into a monumentg of evil intluences by the part he took in that theatrical opening. And we vestibule of well never will. 0 2 The Manufacturers’ Record says that we can easily quadruple the tourist travel of Florida by building good roads all over the State. There isn’'t the slightest doubt that the tourist travel here is going to in- crease every winter and that we will have better roads with each succeed- ing year; nor will we have to rely on that $50,000,000 bond issue to set both or either. For all time to come the climate will draw the tourists, and bond issue or no bond 1ssue, the roads will steadily improve as one of the factors in the general progress of the State. Same way in Lakeland, Bro. Me- tederal Creary, and it saves an awful lot of worry. There will he no perturba- tion in Lakeland newspaper circles following the fourth of March, for our serenity is firmly based upon the well-known political beatitude which ! tells us that blessed is he who ex- pects nothing, for he shall not be disappointed. e The Times-Union replies in a long | and stately leading article to the | criticism of the Telegram that it was too frigid in its relations to the State press, and when we finished 1cading it we gogp into our overcoat and asked the office boy to please puke up the fire.
