For many years there was no £rowth of the societies, in fact, there | was a time, less than a hundred years ago, when it was exceedingly dangerous for a man to belong to a secret organization, and a political Party was once organized to oppose and destroy one of those then in ex- ictence. After the great civil war, these fraternities began to take on life and to expand to their present largs rnumbers and enormous membership One of these organizations now numbers at least a million and a half in members, while another ' reports thirteen hundred thousand, and there are several others whose member- ship will reach the million mark. It is, of course, impossible to estimate how many of the men of this coun- try belong to secret fraternities. Many of these organizations have insurance features of different kinds, in ‘which the member’s family is in- sured against the possibility of his death or sickness. Some of them raise monuments to the dead of the fraternity, all of them with solemn services commit the bodies of their dead members to the grave, and at- tempt to comfort the afflicted. As most of them religiously con- ceal their deeds of charity, no esti- mate can be made of the actual work they do in relieving the distressed, hut many of them are engaged in charitable work that cannot be hid- den under a bushel. They build and naintain homes for the orphan, homes for the aged, hospitals and sunitariums, conduct employment bu- reaus and attend to the education of the children of their members. These things cannot be and are not done in secrecy, On the whole, the growth of se- cret and fraternal organizations in tiis country has been a healthy fea- ture, and they have made for friend- ship, unity among the peoplc and bcace among the nations to a re- wmarkable degree.—Miami Herald.
