Their story was | that a certain French banker had fled | trom France, after defrauding his cli- lents of $800,000. He had, however, quarreled with another banker and killed him, thus being condemned to imprisonment for life. The American received some spurious documents re- lating to the place where the treasure was hidden and eventually the swin- dlers stated that, in exchange for 9,000 pesetas, the supposed banker would disclose the whereabouts of the box containing $800,000. Several days la- ter the swindlers were cleverly caught by the police, who sent them a tele- gram signed by the American accept- ing their offer, and at the same time making an appointment.
