Remember that an ol o ot bo able to belp it, but that it Ways is an oid bachelor’s BEVERIDGE PROGRES- SIVES" “KEY NOTES” (Continued from Page 1.) oil and tobacco trusts still can raise prices unjustly done so. “Such business chains and legal paradoxes as the American and already have suffers from can be found nowhere else in the world.” The speaker declared the Progres- sive party will accomplish reforms vital to American business. “We mean to put new business laws cn our statute books which will tel! American business men what they can do and what they cannot do. The next great business reform we musi Lave to steadily increaze American prosperity is to change the method of building our tariffs. The turiff mus* be taken out of politics and treated az a business question instead of a politica] question. The greatest need of business is certainty, but the only thing certain about our tariff is un- certainty. Next to our need to make the Sherman law modern understand- oble and just, our greatest fiscal nee:d is a genuine permanent, non-partisan tariff commission,” the speaker said. “There has not been and will not be any sincere and honest eftort by the cld parties to get a tariff commission nor {0 take the tarift out of politics. “A tariff high enough to give American producers the American market when they make honest goods and sell them at honest prices, but low enough that when they sel] dis- honest goods at dishonest prices, for- cign competition can correct both evils; a tariff high enough to enable American producers to pay working- men American wages and so arranged that the workingmen will get such wages; a business tariff whose changes will be so made as to re- assure business insteaa of disturbing it—this is the tariff and the method of its making in which the Progres- sive party believes, for which it does Lattle and which it proposed to write into the laws of the land. Abolition of child labor in fac- tories, mills, mines and sweatshops and a plan for old aze pensions were included in the Progressive platform, Ly the speaker who incidentally fav- ored woman suffrage. Divided Nest. A North Westmorland (FEngland) farmer recently came across a very unusual sight. In the course of his rounds through his fields he found a nest with 25 eggs In it. The large number was not the only marvel, for on examining the eggs, he found that 15 of them belonged to a pheasant, and the remaining ten to a partridge. The pheasant, as the stronger bird, was the probable intruder. Explained. Dick—"What part of the family tree am I, mug?” Mother—*I guess you are one of the limbs, Dick.” Dick —"Do you suppose that's what dad meant that morning when he sald that I ought to be trimmed about every so often ?"—Judge.
