There had been talk for a vear or more among the residents of Laure! Cove, Ligh up on the Cumberland range, that a school for their children | ought to be opencd, with a ‘“reg'lar ' schoolmaster” at the head, and the | thing was an accomplished fact at | last. . modeled, the schoolmaster An old log barn had been re- had ar rived, and Laurel Cove was congratu- lating itself on the boom. “I don't reckon this yere Cove will ever be as big as Raleigh or Nash. ville,” ¢bserved Uncle Jim Henderson, the leading man of the hamlet, “but what I'm sayin' is that we've made a right smart beginning to see the dirt fly.” The schoolmaster was a bachelor | up ‘ He had tried preaching, ped | dling and two or three other occupa- of thirty. cheap. He had been picked tions and made a failure of each. One to look at him would know that he was shiftless and had no ambition, but Laurel Cove wasn't expecting any great shakes of a schoolmaster—not for awhile anyhow. The name of the pedagogue was Jed Baker, and the school committee had arranged that he should board with the Widow Car- son. That's where the committee made a mistake that had serious re- sults. In the first place, the widow already had another boarder in the person of young Tom Beardsly, who got out ties for the railroad and in- tended to marry her. In the next, there was another widow in the Cove a Mrs. Martin, who at once became jealous of the other and was deter- mined to ralse a row. Hardly had the schoolmaster open- ed his “show” and began teaching A, B, ¢ when there was a conspiracy on foot. Tom Beardsley saw a possible rival in him and determined that his schocei should be a failure Mrs. Martin felt that #he had been slighted, and she went to planning how she could get him to her own cabin, Mre, Carson admitted that the schoolmaster was shacklety, but as he wis “eddecated” she felt that could marry him and afd him to make a career she The school ran along for a couple of months and everybody was pleased. Aside from teaching his pupils that twice five is ten, and that “d-og"” spells dog, Jed made the announce- ment that the world was round and that there was more water than land on this globe. Also, that the Chinese ate rats, and that England was entire- Iy surrounded by water. Uncle Jim Henderson was ready to admit about the “d-o-g,” but he took exception to the land and water question and pri- vately advised the schoolmaster to go a little slow. “I hain’t sayin’ that you hain't right about it, mind you,” he remarked, “but you sce we have had so mighty little to do with land and water, and such a heap to do with coonskins around yere, that It's gwine to take time. My son Bil was sayin’ that you told the | scholars the other day it was ninety. | three million miles to the sun” “That's what {t replied Jed Wihat did they measure with?” Instruments, Uncle Jim" Better let it drap, Jed,” n | be ninety three million mites 1o with a shake of his he n.,,' sun. but yon can't find any! iround these dlggins who'll bl it's over f a mile and you dor want to git up and be M I'wo landlookers got i tha x ) " ) cot as look- a man | ing up « tain lands as % | | ! 011, He had the man’s address, but | f» it was in his own handwriting it ! condemned r r than cleared lllm.% 1" couldn’t be proved that he was | ¥, but it was felt by all that he .«n indiscreet, and it 1 to administer a prop- | und send him from the | Cove, Haq the proofs been sufficient Jed | have been put to death. | s, the punishment was to be a | i Baker woul!l and banishment. Beardsly came in to tell her of the whipping, and she detected the ex- ultation in his tones. Then she in- stantly remembered a thing or two. | He had been in town Juring the two | days she was. She had noticed him | in company with a man she believed to ‘ be an officlal of some sort. In passing I the hotel she had caught a fleeting | { | glimpse of him as he dodged out of | sight. Her woman's intuition helped her to a conclusion in a moment, and wheeling on the young man, she ex-i claimed: “Tom Beardsly, “You must be crazy,” he replied, You did it, and I know you did.! What did ye have agin him? How has he ever harmed yon?” vou did it-—you did bon't talk novsense, widder.
