JULY 15, 1912, P gy LRy 4 PR R b 4 wons o PAGE FIVR e s WOMAN’S CLUB DEPARTMENT Edited by the Press Committee of the Woman's Club The interest in civic betterment has become so widespread through- out the country during the past few vears that even the clubs organized primarily for jiterary culture have become to a great extent civic socie- Mrs. Sarah Phatt Decker, of Cclorado, former president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, said recently: “Dante and Browning now have to take a back seat to make room for Being and Do- ing.” Personal culture is no longer put before a great purpose. The sub- ject in which the best women of America are most interested is, How can we best serve our town, our State and our nation? The answer to this Guestion, almost without exception. is found in some form of civic work. Mrs. Decker is a firm believer in the responsibility of club women for the condition of their community. She favors fixing a fine upon every club woman who does not work for this civic improvement of her part of the city. I would make the fine big enough,” she says, “to make every club woman in the country awaken to the importance of *‘clean up day” for every city. These words of Mrs. Decker's, to hold every club woman responsible for the civic improve- ment in her section of the city, seems to be the electric button, the real key to the situation and to success; in- sistent and carnest work in the con- crete, rather than in the abstract, of planning and talking, is what will produce results, and results count, for @11 persons have a touch of the Mis- sourian in them they shown, but once shown interest will be aroused in any minded citizen who loves and country, and enthusiastic effor: will be the tinal result.
