Under prevalling conditions of the present day there seems to be but one method of meeting and overcoming this evil; that 18, to follow Napoleon's motto, “Conquer by replacing.” In other words, to furnish our people with such 'wholesome, educational and uplifting entertainment as will cause them to no longer desire the inferior kind. Various attempts to do this have been made, with gratifying results usually, except on the financial side. If the truth were told, it would probably show that in a ma- jority of cases the money question has at one time or another led to trouble between husbands and wives. Judge Goodnow, of the Chicago| court of Domestic relations, proposes what he regards as a complete solu- tion of this problem. He holds that husbands should pay their wives reg- ular salaries. Mrs, Thomas Martin complained to him that Mr. Martin had never given her any money since they were married, and when Mr. Martin replied that she had never asked for any, Judge Goodnow re- torted: “She doesn’t have to. A wife 18 not ‘obliged to follow her husband about like a monkey, with her hand' out, asking for money. She is en< titled to a fair proportion of his wages. I wil] see that she gets it, t00, in all cases that come befors me.” Judge Goodnow’s plan has the mer- it of novelty, and might be worth trying. It is a question, however, whether a wife would not feel that the acceptance of a regular salary do 80 without pecuniary los¢; and)from her husband would place her CITY AND COUNTRY PROPERTY— | many communities prudently —de-|virtuslly in the status of a servant to him.—New York Mall L5 iyl THE LAKELAND STEAM LAUNDRY We are ‘just as aui(mlfo M yonuyoumhbom~ TRY US..
