It was a small dog to be shot by a big policcman, but it people persisted in allowing their ferocious animals to infest the strects and there terrify pedestrians they must abide by the consequences. It was the beast’s steady, silent per- sistence which convizced Brill that he was in a highly perilous situation. The perspiration began to bead his face and he breathed hard. There was no policeman in sight. He passed a woman and a little girl, but even in his agitation he could rot bring him- self to appeal to 2 woman for pro- tection. He supposed that almost any man would have looked 2ot the dog and grinned if he did not happen to have the same dislike for dogs which afllicted Brill, He knew now precise- ly how a woman felt in the presence of a mouse and he resolved that never again would he jeer at a woman in such a situation, Brill had gone two blocks with the terror at his heels and he felt thad nie had gone a mile any longer, he whirled about. “You miserable little beast!” he cried. “I'd like 10 choke you! An angry controversy is razing in German military circles about a re- markable entertainment given a few days ago at the “Landwehr cfficers’® easino in the Hardenberg ctrasse. The Kaiser usuaily attends this entertain- ment, but this year, owing to the death of the Grand Duke of Luxcmburg, he sent his son, Prince Eitel Friedrich. One-piece gowns are still the vogue. Crepe de chine is enjoying a decld- ed popularity. In evening dress two colors are often combined. White is very prominent in millin- ery and in footwear. Many belts will be worn, and the leather ones are very chic. Patent leather belts are smart for linen, gingham, etc., frocks. In millinery small flowers tightly pre designs are used. A charming new material for dressy motoring coats is known as sponge. White dresses are frequently re- lieved with bright sashes and girdles. There is a decided revival of the Jacket bodice popular during the sec ond empire. and Doing Up Old Brown Boots, Old boots and shoes, especially of the tan varieties, can be made to do duty by coloring them black, and this in a way that is certain not to fail or crack in wet weather. Put the boots on to their trees, and then sponge with warm water in which & little soda has been dissolved, remov- ing all dressing or polish which may have collected on the uppers. When dry apply two or three coatings of shoe-makers' ink, and finish off with any good black paste polish. The boots will look almost like a new pair. Tan shoes, which are too yellow or light in color can very easily be dark- ened by applying a solution of am- monia and soda in water, applied at intervals. Each coat produces a deep- er shade, t!ll a good dark winter brown Is reached. Children’s Wear. Great variety exists in the applica- tion of punch-work, says the Dry Goods Economist. This stitch is used n medallion effect, as a background to bring a design into strong rellef, or to form the whole or a portion of a design. An excellent illustration of the last mentioned method of application 18 noted in a poppy design with punch work petals, which comes in scarfs and pillow tops, and in a highly fa- vored butterfly design with punch work wings, the latter being one of the favorite designs in guest towels.
