S R 0 1 it be true that misery loves com- nany, each of the defeated candi- dates may be miserably happy, for he hes plenty of company. » ——————— We will expect great things from Congressman Sparkman during the term of office for which he has Just been elected, and which finds him at the zenith of his powers and influ- ence. B R R BCLI TV Faithful in few things, Park Tram- mell deserves to be placed over many. The ple have applied that test to him repeatedly, and he has al-| ways proven faithful. That’s why they're going to see that he is placed in the office of governor. e i iy The Osceola Journal says: ‘From . the pictures of some of the candi- dates in Polk courty, we are per- suaded that alfalfa grows successfully in that region.” But it wasn’t cul- " tivated by the voters on election day. At the solicitztion of the breth- yen, the Fort Myers Press has gotten a new heading, but it still doesn’t _suit the critical eyes of some of th’ artistic members of the craft. The hesding of a newspaper is somewhat | like 2 man’s hat, being itself of much . less importance thap that which is mder it. When it requires twenty-six hours of steady, strenuous work aftér the . polls have closed to count the bal- ‘\Jots in a precinct, it looks like that . precinct needs to be divided. This was the case with the East Lake-' and precinct, and is one 6f the indi- " eations of fhe great increase in pop- ulation in this district. + ‘Well, we haven't, put ourselves.in the attitude of some folks, who If Wilson had carried Florida, or, if he shou!d yet be mominated, couldn’t say a word in his behalf without stul- titying themselves. We have print- ed no word against any one of the Democratic candidates for president that we will have to take back in or- der consistently to support him. If others had been as conservative it would have increased the chances of Democratic success, When there is such an overwhelm- ing expression sentiment in favor of any candidate as in the cast of Park Trammell, it seems a uselcss hardship that he should be compellod to go through the formality of a second primary, Milton and Gibbons would save considerable money and disap- pointment, and gain credit for a graceful -act if they were to step aside and let the people have thelr rea] choice without. further delay, Considering the fact that Mr. Beacham, of Orlando, had never been before the people in any public cg- pacity, he waue a good race. In th’ls courty, where he was practically un- known before he became a candi- date, he ran second, getting a splen- did vote in the two Lakeland pre- cincts, especially. The Evening Tele- gram is of the opinion that he was ‘ the strongest man in the race in the ‘ semse of inclination and ability to Serve the people. He was handi- capped by being unknowp to a large number of the voters, and, also, to some extent, by the fact that he is not what is usually termed a “‘good raixer,” though a courtly, aftable gen- tleman withal. He has the substan- tial gualifications that eminently fit _ him for public position, and this pa- per hopes to see him yet successtul in his political ambitions, as he has | been in other walks of life, TO THE VOTERS OF POLK COUNTY 1 wish Yo thank you.for the sup- port given me on last Tuesday and especially the handsome majority at my home precinct (Kathleen). Now, I may have made a milstake by making the race’ for tax collector this early date, but I took the medi- cine like a man and I ask you to keep me in mind for two years, hence I may want to try for this office again. With best wishes for the people of Polk county, I remain, Yours very sincerely, i HENRY J. LEWIS. A STATEMENT. To the Subscribers of Peninsular Telephone Compamy, Lake- : land, Florida. While in your city on last Wednes- day- hefore your Board of Trade, at which I had the pleasure of meeting many of the citizens o; Lakeland, I became convinced that there is much misunderstanding as to what the ad- vanced rate, recently announced by our company, means to the people of Lakeland and to our company, I en- deavored then to make the matter clear to you, but the great majority of the citizens of Lakeland were not there and 1 therefore take ' this means of stating some of the mat- ters then discussed that those Who were not present may more clearly understand the situation. One misapprehension that I found many to be laboring under was that the advance in rate would affect all subscribers, ‘This is not a fact, as will be seen by a careful reading of the announcement., The advance af- fects only private line service, There are only about two hundred private lines on the exchange and more than three hundred party lines. The party lines are in no way affected by the advance. The advance in rate on private lines is only fifty cents per month, which willl not exceed one hundred dollars per month to the en- tire city of Lakeland. However; any subscriber who is using privade line service may change to a party line service which remains at the old rate of one dollar and a half for residence and two dollars and a half for busi- ness. Many have already applied for this service which will further de- crease the dmount that the company will receive from the advance. It will, therefore, be seen that instead of the company receiving . severdl hundred dollars per month from the advance, as many have seemed to think, that the amount it will re- ceive will be less than a hundred dol- lars per month. As against this small increase of receipts from the exchange at Lake- land, the company has already be- gun improvements which will, when completed, cost tne company from twelve to fifteen thousand = dollars within the next few months, Among these improvements will be the in- stallation of 20,000 to 25,000 feet of cable, practically all of which will be placed underground, This means the mass o fpoles and' wires th: now obstruct and mar the principal streets of your city will be removed It also’ means a more efficient tele~ phone service. It means that when this work is completed Lakeland will have a better telephone plant than can be found in any city of its size throughout the United States.: But the company cannot afford this ex- penditure if it must operate this ex- change at a 10ss, and the fact is that it is operating at a logs. We' do not belleve ‘that a peopls of the public spirit that the people of Lakeland are manifesting in oth- er affairs in the general develop- ment of the city, would desire to as- sume an attitude which would pre- vent this development or wish us to operate a telephone service for them from which we receive no profit but suffer loss. : l.!e-pectlully.
