The action of the City Counvil to- day in granting a franchise to a company formed for the purpose of operating a gas plant will be ap- proved by an overwhelming major- ity of the citizens. The members of the Council did not act hastily or inadvisedly; they went into the mat- ter with great thoroughness aud care and at every pomt they conserved the interests ci the «itizens Ve believe they made no misieke iu dealing liberally with the proot2rs of this industry and hus securing tor Lakeland anotucr substantial and needed improvement. | True, there will be those who will maintain that the franchise, being valuable to the gas company, ought to have been sold for a handsome sum. This is very well in theory, but in practice it reguiics two par- ties to complete a saie In this in- stance the buyer was Jacking, has been lacking all these years, and there is no assurance that he would put in an appearance for many years to come. A franchise, like anything else, is not worth much un- less a buyer is found. Furthermore, besides the indirect benefits of such an enterprise, in fur- nishing a clean, convenlent and de- sirable fuel to the citizens, it wil! be a question of only a very short time until the city will reap finan- clal benefits that will more than off- set any potential price that might have been secured by the initial sale. For instance, a consumption ot 15,000,060 cubic feet would mea cash revenue of $300 per year to the eity; 21,000,000 cubic feet, $630, and 50 on, until a consumption of $50,. 000,600 cubie feet would entitle the city to the handsome perpetual rev- enue of $2,000 per annum, hesides the taxes and other incidental ad- vantages, We believe the membors of ity Coaneil are to ho on the indepenisn® and progressive spivit. which seeied for the peopie this improvement which wil! add to the comfort anl convenicnes of 1ifs ‘n this splendid city, the e late cong involved, this paper would steadfastly advocated that course, instead of granting a franchise to private owners; but, as everyone knows, the establishment of a muni- cipal gas plant for years to come is out of the question, and it was a cholce of letting private capital take “p the enterpris: (and the risk at tendant upon it) or do wiilout the improvement on'irelv. —_ No man who seeks election to pub- | lic office can dodge the issue of good roads so squarely placed in the front. Beacham appeals to the people because he is one of them. tle appeals to the people because (hey can understand what he intends to do for them. They are not forced to wade through miles of statistics on tariff reforms and high flown mes- sages of past and future service ren- dered. Beacham is making his campaign with two importani measures predom- inating, Federal Aid for Good Roads and More Money for Navigable Streams. Beacham will win because the peo- ple are tired of the demagogue and political trickster. The country over is turning to the man of the soil, the man of the common people, the man who will do something for the peo- ple, the man who will forget about ancient history and traditions and Senatorial courtesy and Congressional discourtesy and do the most good for the most people after he is elected. All that his opponents can say about Mr. Beacham {s that he is unknown. He is unknown because he has been busily engaged for the past ten years in making two blades of grass grow WHAT EI5S PEOPLE l where only one grew before. He has been busy in opening new lands, planting orange groves, making money out of Florida soil. But like the Roman of old Mr. Beacham leaves the plow to listen to the call of the people who now clam- or for a son of the soil to represent them. He asks no office because of his political activity. He asks noth- " 8ling from the people because he has served them in the halls of (‘ongress or because he is a silver tongued ora- tor. He asks nothing from the people because he represents the corpora- tions or any political faction and wants to serve two masters. Beacham making his own campaign, paying his own expenses, assisted by no pow- !yn-upln-, will owe alleziance to none [but the people. And he will be eloct- |ed. for the time has arrived for the I people to rule. - Sanford Herald SAME HERE. 1t has now been agreed that there is but onme knocker that should be tolerated.
