The Seltman-Payne-Carters mys- tery has been solved. It will be re- membered that Monday ths paper copied a notice from the Tampa Tri- bune in which it was stated that Frank Seltman had reached that city with a number of bruises on his head and face, which he stated bhad beea inflicted by the bookkeeper at Car- ters. The bookkeeper, Mr. E. Lamar Payne, a very fine gentleman, indeed, denied the statement in our issue ot Tuesday, stating that from the ar- ticle he had received some very un- desirable notoriety, as he had never heard of the man before he read the article. This morning Mrs. B. Janoswski, wife of the leader of the Citizens' band, visited the Telegram oftice and explained the matter thoroughly, Mr. Seltman is her father. He lives at Tampa and was returning to that place when the assault occurred. She stated that when he reached Tampa he told the police ofticers he had been assaulted at Pauway, the first sta- tion beyond Lakeland where a large lumber mill was located. The po- lice shrugged their shoulders, saying they knew nothing of such a place as Pauway and gave it to the Tri- bune as Carters, knowing there was a lumber mill there, Thus was Car- ters drawn into the affair. The way the bookkeeper figured in the affaic was through Mr. Seltman saying that he did not know who had attacked him, but he was of the opinion that it was a man employed in this ca- pacity at the mill, Mrs. Janowski, who with her hus- band lives on the Hallam tract, stat- ed that her father was waiting for the train at Pauway, when a man brushed against his suit case, knock- ing it to the ground. He mildly remonstrated with the man, where- upon the latter picked up a club or blunt instrument, and beat Mr. Selt- man over the head and shoulders, in- flicting several painful wounds. There were three other men, all of whom were white, who joined in abusing and cursing the old gentle- man. The latter asked a colored man it he would carry his grip to Mr. Janoswski's house and when he start- er to comply with his wishes, the men threatened him and prevented him from rendering assistance, Mr, Seltman then had to wait for the train and go to his home in Tampa before his wounds were dressed, FRECKLED GIRI.S I have just received a stock of WILSON'S FIII‘('I\'I I CREAM, prod- | | freciie nd tan give you back your money. in, see and try it. ON SPORTING PAGES Beligious “Ads,” Appealing to Men, Will Be Displayed. New York, March 14.—The Pub- licity commission of the Christian Conservation (ongress, which meets here April 19-24, in connection with the Men and Religion Forward Movement, placed with all the New York daily newspapers tonight ad- vertisements of a religious nature, which will be displayed on the sport- ing pages daily for the next six weeks. . The innovation is one of many be- ing tried here to bring home to the people the call of the churches for men. The movement is declared te be absolutely noncectarian and re- flects this in the first advertisement, which reads: “There are 880 Protesmnt and Catholic churches in Greater New York, and 107 synagogues. These all have a message for men which men need. Lift up your living and your thinking.” Another advertisement says: ‘“The churches are not perfect, but their faces are turned that way, Why not help lift them up? If you are not better, perhaps they can help you. Let us get together for man's good and God's glory.” RO OHCHO O CROROHACRORCROROHORCHORCROROHORORORCK SHOOTING STARS While the Star Theater has shot into their new field, you can find plenty of stars shooting around in our rink every night.
